Vigilante as a series is a very messy and bizzare spin-off. It moves quite a lot of issues and changes the tone so much each few chapters that I'm not surprised fans drop it after first few volumes. Doesn't help that many critics/haters of main series say this is so much better, and while i agree some aspects are handled well, it really falls comparing it to MHA. Even if Final Act Saga has really underwhelming stuff and is overall so rushed, I would still remember Horikoshi's bad decisions at times, meanwhile mostly this manga is kinda forgettable. It has its peaks, but it doesn't even reach to Internship Arc scenes.
Art is nice I'll admit, but usually it tries to mimic Horikoshi's style and it looks pretty weak in comparision.
Also man the ending is so weak, climax lasts for 3 volumes and the end of it feels so rushed, especially Pop and Aizawa relationship with Koichi. After reading last volume I thought it was a bit empty. If it wasn't for rest of series and what I liked about it I would hate on it much more.
But enough complaining, what's good about it? (note, i still get a bit picky here)
-Knuckleduster is so cool man, even if he kinda sucks as a father (and he shouldn't dissapear for so damn long)
Pop Step and Koichi are alright, both are very relatable to me, (Pop can be mean, but she's a good person and Koichi is such a nice guy that he can be creepy at times), but i wish it was less about them in the middle of the series
Midnight character is very likeable here, even more than in main series
Captain Celebrity might be a superdouche but he really grew on me, just like main series characters have a lot of Hidden Depths
I like side characters, yea i know they are kind of a deadweight, but it's usually very hard for me to outright dislike a character, even if it's Mineta, and they have neat designs
Soga is mostly just diet Bakugo/Garou but he has his moments
Furahashi's writing is fairly decent, but some of the arcs were really tiring, climax was mostly saved by Betten's drawings
Speaking of Betten, despite what i said about him earlier, he really improved his art starting from around Sky Egg Arc, and man volume 14's drawings are probably his best
I know some people complain about inclusion of the original characters but damn some like Ingenium, Fat Gum or Mirko are very well handled here
Number 6 as a villain i feel kind of mixed about, but he's a nice change from Shigaraki and damn i felt kind of sorry for him at the end, wish we've seen more of him
Glad that there's a lot of extras after each chapter, my favorite are "WHAT I Fs" which are always cool to look at, I wish Hori could take notes
I like the superhero stuff refrences, too bad we don't get them in the 2nd half of story that much or barely at all.
Neverless, I'm glad that such spin-off lasted for so long, and I would recommend this to people who hate on MHA or really big fans of it. I will miss these characters anyway.
Manga Alright spin-off, but...
