FanficRecs Your Mileage May Vary
I liked this fic, I really did. In the beginning it was well-written, not out of character, and provided reasonable explanations for a lot of things in the movie. However, as I got further and further into the story, I felt as if many of the other characters were being overshadowed by Jack. Bunnymund, especially, is pretty constantly put down for not liking Jack and vice-versa (with what I felt were insufficient in-story reasons). It got kind of annoying after awhile. I wouldn't call it character-bashing, however, because it never gets to that level.
Likewise, I wouldn't call Jack a mary sue either. Despite the fact that a lot of characters seem to like him or want to help him at first glance, he does have his flaws and issues. All I'm going to say is that the author is skirting the line.
As per the title of my review, your mileage may vary on this fic based on how well you personally tolerate the flaws I mentioned. If you do read it, you are in for a fairly well-written, fun romp with a few issues in character development.
FanficRecs A Different Jack-centric
It's different from the usual in that the story doesn't get bogged down with an "angst-ridden" Jack, or a Jack that needs constant saving or pick-me-ups from his "new guardian family." It takes you through a new way that Jack could have spent his 300 years as a relatively unknown, misjudged, or underestimated Winter Spirit.
Does Jack "overshadow" other characters? Yes, it's Jack-centric. However, both canon characters and O Cs do get their time to shine and are slowly developing. I usually despise O Cs in fan-fiction, but many of the O Cs in this story serve a true purpose and really start to come into their own in this fic. You will actually become interested in them and their stories. As the story continues to develop, we see more changes in Jack's relationship with North and the start of the changing relationship with Bunny. Sandy's been with Jack this whole time, and pretty much developed alongside him. The only Guardian who doesn't get much so far is Toothiana, and that may even change in the future.
The only thing this story is missing is the element of a hard-fought battle. It would be interesting to see if this story will remain as light-hearted as it has been, or if there will be a round two with the Dark Side that will be harder to overcome than the events in the movie (and the author's retelling of these events.) As it stands, the action is pretty low right now.
FanficRecs Worth the read, but needs some editing.
This fic was great! It really needs it's own trope page, too. I agree with the above for the most part: Jack does overshadow the other characters a bit, but it's a Jack-centric fic, so I think it can be forgiven. The reason Bunny is put down so much for not liking Jack is that his distrust is unreasonable, and in fact a plot-relevant reason for his continued distrust is given in the story. It just takes a long time to come about. And the plot was AMAZING! You can really tell that the author planned the whole thing out from start to finish, and with 130 chapters that is really saying something!
But, like my title says, it could do with a little more editing. There aren't many of the typical spelling or grammatical errors, but the author seems to have a little trouble with punctuation. Specifically, commas. Sometimes there's too many, breaking up a sentence in an odd way. Sometimes there's even a period and a new sentence where there should have just been a comma. The end result is a lot of incomplete clauses that can be rather jarring when you're really into the story and run across one. For the length of this fic there really aren't many such errors, but there were certainly enough to remain on my mind once I'd finished.
