Vilgax Must Croak

So, despite my mixed feelings for Omniverse, I was actually excited when it was announced Vilgax was coming back. While an AF/UA fan, even I am lucid that Alien Force Vilgax was kinda pathetic (though he got a bit better in UA), and I really wanted to see how Omniverse would deal with him; seeing how Vilgax is a major factor in fans' opinion of AF, I thought this might be the deciding factor to say weither or not Omniverse is a good show. When informations about the episode arrived, I had mixed feelings. I wasn't a fan of the look, since I had been expecting something more like the original show, with a gaz mask. On the other hand, I really liked the concept of Ben having to protect Vilgax while leading him to jail. Sounded like an interesting premise.

Then I got the actual episode. And while it was decent, I am... a bit disappointed.

Vilgax himself actually is quite good. He is portrayed as a serious villain, with people actually scared of him, and while he doesn't really gets to fight, he seems competent from the few parts I saw. I still don't find his look THAT good, but hey, detail. Attea was equally good, being both dangerous and fun. Some jokes actually made me laugh, especially the part about Ben asking her if she'll turn into a princess if a guy kiss her.

The problem is... somewhere else. Mainly Ben.

I really hate that they made Ben less mature and more bumbling, and it shows here. In all previous show, including AF/UA, Ben, even at his dumbest, never underestimated Vilgax. Sure he would crack jokes, but most of the time he was aware the guy was a treath (except in Vengeance of Vilgax maybe). Heck, by the end of UA, he aknowledge him as more dangerous than Diagon! And yet, here, he treated escorting him casually, mocked him constantly and was downright careless. I think it would have worked better if Ben had been serious all the episode, as to display his Arch Enemy relationship with him. Instead, we get jokes.

The second problem was the Bounty Hunters. I admit, it was great to have Sixsix back, and the three of them were at first effective. But then, toward the end of the episode, they all surrender as soon as Rook and the Plumbers show up, despite easily defeating them sooner. That was... anticlimatic, to say the least.

Overall, a good episode, but not as great as I would have wanted it.

Ah yes, this episode, I considered doing a separate review for it myself, the Nostalgia Factor really got me hyped for this. Now a few points

1: Steve Blum: When James Remar voiced Vilgax, the contrast was so jarring, now Steve Blum's back, and I do think it's for the better. As for Vilgax, The Comically Serious aspect was new, but the episode never really delivered on how much of a threat he was, IMO. I like his new design, I'm wondering if they ever explained how he cycled through his three redesigns.

2: Love the Bounty Hunters, Sevenseven is my favorite, and it was cool to see them both (plus Eighteight) kicking ass. I will admit that the surrendering part really didn't make sense. The three are covered in weapons, and were previously shooting the four plumbers apart, why did they give up? Another thing I like was when he hit them as cannonbolt, and how their efficiency was ranked by appearance. I do hope they all appear again.

3: Hobble's antics got kind of annoying.

4: Ben's treatment of Vilgax as a lesser threat, while yeah, the comments on Villain decay were nice, Vilgax has always been a threat, not a successful one, but still a major one, Ben should have been more serious. His stupidity was displayed more here, which is unfortunate.

This episode was good: The ending was... bleh (He got up and ran away, he didn't attack anyone?), but I like the action, the designs, and the formulaic plot.

Thanks for commenting^^

Yeah, I wanted to mention Vilgax's Bond Villain Stupidity too, but I didn't have enough words for that. Rather disappointing indeed; you'd expect him to seize the opportunity to take Ben or kill him, but nah! He just ran away... if at least they had given a justification like him wanting to defeat Ben personnally, it could have worked, but otherwise...

Hey, Hobble's antics are the same than Ben's, Crashopper's, Beauman's and Packmar's: taking a character and making him the Butt Monkey. That can work sometimes, but in this show it just pisses me off. ESPECIALLY with Ben. How are we supposed to believe he is the savior of the universe after that?

My Question is, Did he fight Attea and the hunters? He got up, and they were stirring, then he got into a ship, and they were still unmoving, did he beat them unconscious (and we missed it?! Awww) or was it an animation flub? I really wished that those three turned up later in the arc, alas.

As for neglecting the Bond Villain Stupidity... Curses, word count strikes again.

Butt Monkey jokes are kinda wearing thin, Packmar's roles kinda make the scene predictable, and they aren't normally that funny, I'm sorry to say.

I wonder when Vilgax will reappear, will he be the next Big Bad, or another incidental character before becoming the next Big Bad (because he's gonna take up the main villain title eventually)?

Honestly, most of the jokes in Omniverse aren't that funny. I do get a laugh sometimes (like when Hokestar put the "closed" card in Store 23), but otherwise they do it so often it's no longer funny. Other than the Butt Monkey side, Blucik and Driba's stupidity is just painful to watch sometimes.

Well, I do hope they will use V Ilgax as the Big Bad eventually, otherwise the show no longer will have any credit.
