The experience is what you make of it.

Though the engine itself is still growing in terms of feature development, it can be used as a springboard for fighting game projects if one is willing to learn how to utilize the resources and understand what makes what work. Of course there are balance issues, but that's because most content is created "free-flow" with no real expectation that balancing is going to be going on unless the engine is being used to make a standalone free game such as The Black Heart.

The community itself is just that, a community—there are going to be people that are helpful and those that are not. It's all a matter of how one chooses to approach things and whether they're making an effort to go through all the proper channels.

Personally, my biggest gripe with MUGEN is how big a hassle it can be to find decent characters - especially if you have one specifically in mind.
