One of my favorite Internet reviewers

There are a lot of comedic reviewers on the Internet, but my personal favorite of them all is Brandon Tenold, a sarcastic Canadian who looks at horror, monster, fantasy, sci-fi, superhero, and action films that are typically seen as lowbrow schlock by the mainstream but have nonetheless developed cult followings. One may be reminded of the likes of Nostalgia Critic or AVGN when watching his reviews, but I personally find him to be much more enjoyable than many of the more popular Internet reviewers.

Now, like a lot of his kind, Brandon Tenold's reviews focus more on making fun of the stuff he reviews than truly evaluating them in a critical sense, typically saving his honest opinion for the conclusion of his videos. But whereas most Internet reviewers go for a very over-the-top style by flipping out, screaming, and overreacting to their subjects, Brandon Tenold is much more deadpan. Snarky riffing form the basis of his videos' comedy, making him far less noisy than most of his fellow reviewers. And I think he's one of the few Internet celebrities who pulls off sarcastic humor well, because A) most of the material he covers just begs to be given commentary in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000; and B) he is genuinely fond of the genres he reviews and always makes it clear when he thinks a particular film is a legitimately well-crafted and/or entertaining piece of cult cinema. His snide humor is of the affectionate variety, and like most of the films he reviews, we shouldn't take it too seriously.

Another thing that works for Brandon Tenold is that he's very straightforward in how he does things. While a lot of Internet critics throw in weird sketches and recurring characters that often interrupt the pacing and use up valuable commentary time, Brandon's reviews are simple and focused. He always begins with an introduction that explains and contextualizes the film, then watches and riffs on the movie, and finally gives his opinion on it at the end. He never deviates from this formula, and appearances from anyone other than himself are typically quick and painless. Thus, Brandon avoids a lot of the awkwardness that most Internet review series create with their sketches and stuff. The fact that this style has been maintained for over 200 episodes speaks to its effectiveness.

Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews is the Internet equivalent of watching a cheesy movie with your friends and making fun of it while you do so. His affectionate and well-executed style of deadpan MST3K riffing and simple but highly effective approach is perfect for tackling the films he reviews. If you love the kinds of movies he covers, you'll appreciate the love he holds for the films under his snide remarks and if you hate those kinds of films, you'll appreciate his snarky humor towards how schlocky they are.
