I don\'t think the film is that obscure. I think it faded from the public consciousness due to the controversy surrounding its overworked animators (which is also why its animation looks so good at $19 million).
I do some cleanup and then I enjoy shows you probably think are cringe.

Sausage Party is one of the dirtiest, sickest, stupidest and raunchiest things I have ever seen in my life - and I mean that lovingly.
Sausage Party is about a group of food that get lost in the supermarket. The group is led by Frank, a sausage who discovers the truth about his existence and goes on a journey with his friends to escape their fate. The animation is good. Very good. Need I remind you that this was produced on a budget of $19 million? The film quickly faded into obscurity because of how vulgar it was. I like vulgar stuff, so I like this hot dog movie, OK?
This film is a cynical joke on religion. The sausages and buns represent Christianity (albeit a religion that allows them to strut naked). Judaism is represented by a bagel, Muslim people are represented by a Lavash, Native-Americans are represented by Firewater, African-Americans are represented by a box of grits who hates crackers, a Twinkie is homosexual, and the fruits are homosexual too (and the Nazis are in there, just for kicks)!
At the end of the movie, there is the infamous food orgy. You know the one I’m talking about...

After the gods are killed, the foods fuck each other. The moral, apparently is too embrace hedonism and have sex with it. There’s no point in living your life, so enjoy it as much as you can.
