A great, original FPS Metroidvania

Prey is a great game. It's a Metroidvania-type game. That is, it's the kind of game where your character starts off weak and gets stronger as you unlock abilities and equipment, but all while exploring the same general "area" as you unlock more and more rooms.

I've heard some people complain about the game, and I think most complaints boil down to improper expectations. One, the name of the game is Prey. You are prey. You are not a badass killer adventurer hero. At least, not at the beginning. You have to run and hide and be careful, so it mostly plays like a stealth game at the beginning.

Secondly, the game does have an inverse-difficulty curve. That is, the beginning is often the hardest, because your character sucks, your equipment sucks, everything is hostile, all the doors are locked, you have no resources, etc. That probably turns off a lot of people, because they get "stuck" fighting a dozen enemies with no ammo left and they don't know where to run.

With that said... if you take it carefully like the name suggests, it sets up a good atmosphere. The whole setting allows for a lot of wonder, constantly hinting at where you could be going... later. What you could be doing... later. What you might find out... later. It teases a lot to keep the interest up.

There are a few bugs. I didn't encounter anything that completely broke the game, but did make things annoying. For example, the fabricator in my office broke. I just couldn't use my office as my main base any more, because I would have to run and find a different fabricator elsewhere. Sometimes, quest markers completely bug out and just lead you nowhere or get you running in circles. Thankfully, the main quest markers are okay, it was always optional quests that had this issue.

Story-wise, it plays out like a psychological mystery. Your character has amnesia, and you're trying to figure yourself out as much as the place you're in. It's mostly a straight-line story with minor sidequest deviations, and a few minor branches for the endings.

The post-credits ending made a lot of people unhappy, and... personally, I didn't like it. It felt like a combination of Sequel Hook and New Game+ excuses, while being pretty unnecessary.

Still, it's a very good game, with a lot of style, decent story, great setting and worldbuilding, level and art design, but a difficult learning curve at the beginning. 8/10
