The Benchmark for Overkill

It's telling when a mod like Russian Overkill (RO), which focuses only on There Is No Kill Like Overkill, has yet to be eclipsed in the overkill department despite being around for a decade. Since its initial release, there have been other mods that also focus on big, overpowered guns — even PillowBlaster's later mods, Trailblazer and Guncaster, share this focus — but they lack something that would make them a cut above RO. The main focus in Pillowblaster's other mods is more towards a certain theme and less on the overkill, whereas in RO, the overkill is the main bit, with Glorious Mother Russia being the secondary focus. A mod like Too Many Super Shotguns lacks the polish that RO has, and features an uneven weapon set.

The funny thing about RO is that, despite the whole point of the mod being its insane arsenal, it comes with different difficulty settings to tone down the wanton destruction; playing maps with the "Red Oktoberfest" and "Stalin is after you" difficulties is almost like playing vanilla Doom on Ultra-Violence or Nightmare, but with all the added extra features added in. This means that, even though RO is first and foremost an overkill weapons mod, it is possible to tone down the overkill and play the game "normally" with the most Russian weapons ever made, which enhances its playability value.

PillowBlaster's later mods feature a much greater polish, and there are other talented modders out there who make incredible gameplay mods, but if what you want is just a lot of weapons, and a lot of overkill, this is the be-all and end-all — nothing else comes close, and I'm confident that nothing ever will.
