''The Dragon's Mantle'' is very, very easily the best Freedom Planet fanfic on the market. With an absolutely devastating premise and outstanding execution, it manages to keep its readers on the edge of their seats at every waking moment, and pulls out all the stops in the Nightmare Fuel and Tear Jerker departments along the way. It has some of the best characterizations of FP's cast in its entirety that I've ever seen, and perfectly handles unaddressed issues like the status of Neera's relationship to the heroes and what went down between Lilac and Spade. It even goes out of its way to give us a more in-depth exploration of Avalice while working it well into the plot. The entire thing is expertly crafted (right down to its formatting; I like the use of line breaks to represent changes between character POVs) and all around extremely pleasant to read. Well, except when you're crying.
It's also one of the only stories I've seen that can nail down Carol as a really solid main protagonist, so props for that too.
Every Freedom Planet fan should read this story, especially if they write fanfiction themselves. Seriously, take notes. That's what I'm doing.
