Ultimate Sequel

If you had asked me right after I played the well-made but thoroughly miserable Danganronpa, "Do you have any plans to play Danganronpa 2?" I would have replied "Yeah, sure! If I ever feel suicidally depressed and want something to push me over the edge, I'll play Danganronpa 2. Ha ha ha - anyway, I'm off to see the new Avengers film."

I have a weird opinion on the story this time around. Once again, a group of Hope's Peak Academy students are trapped somewhere and a psychotic robot toy bear forces them to kill each other, so it very much feels like a rehash at first. But once the game is complete, the story... still feels like a complete rehash, but in a way that's actually justified and makes a satisfying amount of sense. The gameplay is a little worse though, with the Hangman's Gambit and Logic Dives both taking far too long to say things that are far too obvious in ways that are far too boring.

The characters are a bit hit and miss. Some of them feel like expies from the previous game, like the female gymnast with massive... appetite (who also has trouble finding shirts that fit), the violent gang leader who it turns out has feelings, and the perpetually nervous guy who never really contributes anything to the plot. But overall, the characters are probably more engaging and well-written. It's just a shame that the rest of the game isn't very well-written, with lots of eye-rolling self-referential humour, a truckload of pop culture references, and historically unfunny lines like "My stepmom's lovers like to get drunk and gimme full-body massages."

This game also manages to have better pacing than the previous one, which killed off so many characters so quickly that the second half of the game had to slow down. This game has more characters, and only one trial where two people were murdered, so things happen at a much steadier pace. Danganronpa games still suffer from the problem of characters only becoming really interesting when they kill or die, which leaves you unhappy with your dwindling party of boring people, but I can't say the story ever slowed down. Which is a compliment, for a 36 hour game.

Overall... if I sound less affected by this game, it's because I didn't think I would play it so soon, so I spoilt it for myself after playing the first one. And I'd love to say that was a mistake, but honestly, maybe it wasn't. The trials still hit me really hard, especially the endings to Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5, but this time it wasn't so soul-crushingly depressing. And for the game to still kick my heart in the ass when I knew exactly what was going to happen is a sign of pretty great storytelling.

So I was a little less engaged this time around, but with a game like Danganronpa, that might actually be for the best, because I was able to enjoy this game a lot more. I guess I finally found some hope in this miserable old world of despair.

...I honestly dunno how this happened, but who am I to deny you the joy you\'ve found?

Also, Nagito continues to be a trash character whose appeal to his rabid fanbase (beyond pure memetic qualities) utterly mystifies me, and he killed my favorite character too so double-screw him. In a plot that would\'ve handed the mastermind everything they wanted on a silver platter had it succeeded no less.

I just hate him a lot, and the fact that the game doesn\'t, and the other fans don\'t, really gets under my skin.

I don\'t hate Nagito at all but I also don\'t think he\'s very well-written either. It just seemed like the writers relied on him whenever they needed someone to do or say something, regardless of whether it made sense, because he\'s \'a million ironic finger-quotes\' craaaaaazy or something. He does good things for hope. He does bad things for hope. He does anything at all and the writers imply it\'s for the sake of hope and boom, anything he does is instantly justifiable.

Also may as well mention that for some reason, a month or so after I finished the game, I suddenly realised that Mikan has such an incredibly depressing backstory and that retroactively ruins some of the story. I\'d have to take marks off solely because the game doesn\'t end with everyone pledging their undying friendship and support to Mikan while reassuring her that her feelings are valid and she is valid and then everyone hugs her.

They all kind of do. It’s a dark, dark game. Mostly in terms of retcons that Turn the school into a much more dark, sinister entity then it ever was in the original. Which is also something people don’t seem to talk much about, for some reason.

...So, uh, is there any way to migrate this to the new page so it\'s visible when people click on the \"reviews\" button there?

Eh, the same thing happened when I reviewed Kick-Ass 2.

Don\'t watch Kick-Ass 2, it\'s not very good.

Apparently, there's no way to migrate reviews whenever the name changes. Because of this, I accidentally posted two reviews for Tegami Bachi Letter Bee- one when it was "Tegami Bachi" and another after the name changed. Similarly, my review for V3 was made when the page was titled "New Danganronpa V3," so it can't be reached now that the page is "Danganronpa V3 Killing Harmony."

… I guess you could just re-post the review under the new name, if you wanted to, but I also understand it’s a pain in the butt and you weren’t necessarily notified when the name changes.
