I second this fanfic rec - it's incredibly well thought out, touches on PTSD and how important a support system is and really gets the characters. The relationship development is so heartening, you'll cry and cheer alternately. Sometimes, the dialogue can get a bit more wordy than you'd expect the characters to say, but otherwise, the pinnacle of free form writing.
