Well, It's Not Other M...

This is a re-telling of Metroid: Fusion, though it goes into a full-on rewrite. It embellishes pretty much everything from the original. The GF has become cartoonishly evil in this version. There's a lot more interplay between Samus and Adam.

On the downside, there's very little sense of atmosphere. Very little seems creepy or tense. Even SA-X encounters aren't that threatening (possibly because it talks. Yes, really). Indeed, the story is very light on descriptions of environments at all, preferring to say "looks like Brinstar" to actually describing Brinstar.

There were a few good elements. For example, the fic gives us the sense of what it's like to wake up and find out you're part-Metroid (though giving her talons on her hand was excessive). And Samus reacts rather interestingly to this.

To me, the biggest failure is Samus's personality and character. She comes across as a typical 80's action hero. She quips. She drinks. She bucks authority. She swears at the drop of a hat. She has a no-nonsense, by-the-books "sergeant" who's in charge of the mission. She even has a plucky sidekick with whom they banter and swap insults.

This even conflicts with her backstory. The fic talks about her being raised by Chozo, but you wouldn't tell that based on how she acts or speaks. She uses all kinds of human colloquialisms and such.

While this is rather personal, I've always felt that Samus is the kind of person who only speaks if she has something to say.

Oh, and then there's the part where she absorbs Ridley's brain. Yes, really. For about half the fic, she has Ridley in her head, talking to her. And even better: they become friends (grudgingly). This fic apparently doesn't include the comic, where Ridley murders her mother right in front of her just for shits and giggles. Here, Ridley is all about a good fight.

Oh, and for the ending (spoiler alert). Samus invades the GF homeworld. Yes, really, she causes the death of what has to be millions of beings. All just to bring down a few guys in the government.

Other M trigger warning: Samus BSODs in this fic. Twice. The first time, it's when she sees SA-X on a monitor. But this BSOD sends her into kill-everything mode for a few hours. The other time, it's when she absorbs the memories of a scientist through absorbing a Core-X. So they're justified.

I don't think Other M is a bad game.

Fanfics are so often disasters. This sounds so bad, though I am curious about how Samus reacts to discovering that she is part-Metroid.

I'm up for joining Discord servers! PM me if you know any good ones!

This story felt like it was trying too hard to imitate the awful Super Metroid comic published by Valiant back in the 90s. It even has the same scene where Samus jumps down a chasm screaming "BANZAI!"

Conclusion: avoid this like the plague.

It\'s not how I picture Samus but I thought the fic was fun. It\'s certainly different and more lighthearted than your normal dark Metroid stories. I thought the ending was a bit off given everything else. Overall it\'s Metroid as one of those 90\'s animes, and it does that well.

Umm, Draconic, I think you are exaggerating a bit here.

First. is this review opinionated? Yes, it is. But that is a matter of fact. We aren\'t robots, is impossible for us to give a 100% opinion-less review of a product. Our opinion will always shine through, no matter how hard you try to avoid that.

Second, this review spoils nearly all the major points of the fic and that is acceptable. Yeah, it would have been fine if he warned the readers prior, but that doesn\'t, by itself, disqualify this entire review.

Third, yeah, he might not have liked this Samus but guess what? Everybody is free to have their own opinions. Simply because you liked this version of Samus doesn\'t mean that everybody has to like it too.

Fourth, simply because there isn\'t enough of something doesn\'t meant that a terrible product suddenly becomes a good one. Quality doesn\'t depend on quantity.

And fifth, did you really flag this review simply because you don\'t agree with it?. Okay, that is both childish and petty.

...Also, not to put too fine a point on it, writing your own review was a much better response than a mixture of dread necromancy and ranting about the author. Especially when, frankly, I found his review even-handed and your furious response suggestive of an inability to take criticism.

The flagging was because of the slew of spoilers in the review. I am both childish and petty, but not so much as to report someone for having a different opinion. In any case, yeah, my response was inappropriate. I apologize.

Good man. And again, no objections whatsoever to seeing a review you don’t agree with and writing your own. It’s by far the best way to get your opinion across.

\"The flagging was because of the slew of spoilers in the review.\"

That is a mistake. Spoilers aren\'t a heavy reason enough(at least in my opinion) to flag a review. After all, flagging also damages the receiver\'s reputation, and doing so for spoilers is petty. That is what the comment section is for.

Also, am not saying you shouldn\'t have written your review, but saying that you are doing so simply because of another review is wrong because it gives us the impression that you cannot accept contrarian opinions, making you look childish.
