Good, but slightly annoying.

I apologise for this disjointed review. I have problems with structure, due to my aspergers.

I absolutely love this fanfic, but there have been times I had to pace around my bedroom because I was so miffed that I couldn't hold it in. Specifically, the part where Lily is called shallow and the part where Hermione is talking about feminism.

I disagree with Hermione on what feminism is, because in my version a woman should have the choice to do things.

Imagine there is a pie. Society gives you one slice, and won't let you have the rest, despite it being your pie. Certain people, would give you a different slice, or maybe every slice except the one society gives you, and would have negative thoughts if you touched a slice they didn't give you. I believe men and women should get the whole pie.

It's completely okay to want to impress a boy you like. It's not unfeminist. You don't have to be a strong independent woman to be a feminist.

So, on to Lily.

Imagine there is a black woman, and her friend joins the KKK. Said friend then proceeds to call her the N word. Unless she was a saint, or he stopped hanging out with the KKK, I really don't see how this could end with them staying friends.

James at that point had probably grown up a little, and wasn't part of a group that hated her. Maybe he apologised. He was childish, and a bully, but he was getting better. Snape was not.

I like the sense of humour, apart from the joke involving rape near the beginning. I found that distasteful. Otherwise, it is quite amusing.

I can understand why some people don't like it, but it works for me. If you've not read it, you should give it a try, because if you enjoy Methods, then it will be a lot of fun, if slightly irritating at some points.

Given just the information Harry was given about the girl whose identity he didn't yet know, and with an eleven-year-old's understanding of relationships, who wouldn't have concluded that she was shallow?

And given a twelve-year-olds's understanding, one might have assumed feminism were what Hermione thinks it is. The two may be prodigies, but it seems to mean they are able to absorb and analyse information, not complex social constructs. Hermione is at least shown to be lacking in that sort of maturity in chapter 87. Harry is clearly not ready to let go of his fear of cooties given his reactions to Hermione kissing him. So their emotional maturity is age appropriate, even if their intellectual maturity surpasses it.

I'm aware, but I'm still annoyed. People who don't understand complex social constructs will be reading this, and some might think "Yeah! Feminism is silly!" or "Yeah! Lily should have got with Snape! Why do girls never get with nice guys!?" I know I'm overreacting a little, but it's in my nature. I'm not sure how to think differently. Thanks for replying with this though, rather than insulting me. It reminds me that not everyone on the internet is an immature troll.

I remember being 11 and I remember how Harry behaves in cannon so that's 2 ppl I can think of who would have probably said 'hm' or 'I don't really know her.' And it's a little absurd (tho woefully accurate) for a rationalist to forget you can't make value judgments without validating the story you've been given. In fact it's something Harry does repeatedly throughout the story which would normally make me forgive it (I can't very well hold it against an author who keeps their characterizations consistent, can I?) but the narrative doesn't treat it as Harry messing up.

Which maybe is some kind of meta dig at Rowling, I don't know, but it's annoying as all hell.

I made an account just to comment here and lend you my support. From one aspie to another, I agree with everything you said concerning HP and the Methods of Rationality.

Sorry if this is annoying.

\"Slightly annoying\"? It\'s a cult initiation doctrine made to sucker in gullible readers, and the most you can get worked up about it is \"slightly annoyed\"?
