Informative, but annoying

While undeniably an informative LPer, Chuggaaconroy has some quirks that can be very off-putting.

First and foremost are his puns. While they're fairly tolerable in his older works, in more recent LPs (Pokémon Colosseum in particular) he's gotten so focused on finding puns wherever he can that it's started to distract from the game he's supposed to be playing. And since he's become so focused on finding puns wherever he can, they're bad. Really bad. So bad, that some of them don't even qualify as puns. Plus, the awkwardly bad puns disrupt the flow of his commentary and decrease the overall quality of the LP. Unfortunately, since he seems to view his puns as a badge of honor, it's unlikely that they'll improve.

Beyond that, he has a tendency to gush about games that he likes, fawning over the minute details as they come up. While not in and of itself a bad thing, it can be off-putting to those who do not share his opinion. And it's not that he doesn't have a point, but he tends to trample over the moments that he's trying to highlight, instead of letting the game speak for itself. In my case specifically, his fawning has turned me away from Xenoblade, when before I was at least mildly interested in it.

Finally, like many other LPers that have gathered large followings, Chuggaa is rather loud and exaggerated in his reactions, to the point where he can come off as obnoxious. This wouldn't be much of a problem, if not for the two qualities listed above ensuring that he's obnoxious at every other time.

While I've been mostly critical in this review, don't get the wrong impression. Chuggaa is still one of the most informative Let's Players out there, as well as one of the most professional in terms of editing. If you want a good quality LP, Chuggaa is definitely your best choice. Just don't be surprised if you have to clench your teeth a bit (or a lot) to make it through them.

Weirdly, I have the exact opposite opinion to you for the exact same reasons. I actually wouldn't call Chugga a good informative L Per at all, since while he does do his research, his Man Child, Motor Mouth, Pungeon Master personality makes him nearly impossible to take seriously in an informative context. However, this qualities make him very entertaining to listen to. Basically, I think Chugga does a much better job at being entertaining and funny (well, his reactions at least. His puns are more So Unfunny It's Funny) than he does being informative.

"his fawning has turned me away from Xenoblade, when before I was at least mildly interested in it."

So you've decided to pass on a potentially good game (if not a masterpiece), because of one guy gushing about it? If it really bothered you that much, why didn't you search for a playthrough without commentary?

I wouldn't mind failure so much, if I didn't fail so much.

@Miin U

First off, let me say that in the time since I wrote this review, I've grown willing to give Xenoblade another chance.

With that said, I watched a good chunk of Chuggaa's LP before I gave up (got to the point where the High Entia girl whose name I can't remember was doing her trials), so it's not like I didn't get an idea of what Xenoblade is like. But the thing is, some of the things that Chuggaa was gushing about were things that were making me dislike the game. Particularly, his love or Reyn, who I saw as an idiot that was as likely to cause problems as fix them. Also, giving any positive attention to the sickeningly designed-to-be-as-adorable-as-possible Noppon. Then there's the fact that he would gush about the scenery, when I can see with my own eyes how pretty it looks. I don't need someone telling me variatons of "THIS IS GOOD, PLEASE APPRECIATE HOW GOOD THIS LOOKS," ad nauseum. I can see that for myself, thanks.

In short, there's a number of reasons why I got turned off of Xenoblade, but this review is first and foremost about Chuggaaconroy, not Xenoblade.
