Movie was great! But can we ditch the snowman?

I watched this last night at the theater so I may have forgotten some details, but the movie is more awesome than the tiny description sounds! The first part (exposition) is so sad that even though the movie takes an uplifting turn the sadness still lingers. For 2/3 of the acts, the movie seems dramatic with a touch of humor, until that dumb snowman Olaf comes in. Don't get me wrong; he has some funny moments and isn't a spotlight-stealing jerk. but he didn't really belong in the movie. He was the one using the majority of modern-day slang and taking all the dramatic moments out of everything, although he did play an important role in a later scene (but he could have been replaced by ANY good guy and the scene would have still made sense.) It felt like he was just put in to make the movie appeal to little kids more, which would have made sense at the beginning of the movie or if you were trying to do a complete comedy.

But now that I've complained about one character, let me tell you about the rest of them; they are awesome and layered, have whole personalities and you can't help but like them. The main princess is optimistic and hopeful despite years of her sister being locked away in her room, and still wants to have a relationship with her. There's this guy at the beginning, a (then) kid with a reindeer, who doesn't seem important but I think is one of my favorite guys in a kids movie. He even has a speech about how you shouldn't marry someone you just met and that all guys have something annoying about them. The other characters are great too, but I'm running out of space.

The third act fell a little flat with so much action that it's really confusing to tell what's going on (this is coming from a teen with Aspergers.) Two people are captured (I'm not saying who, because spoilers). Then one person is in the snow and then three people are in the snow and so much stuff is going on that the adults could keep track but I don't think the kids will (especially since the two princesses look similar to each other. For kids, that's an easy thing to get mixed up.) Nevertheless, the ending was decent but the third act could have used a rewrite. But if you like comedy and some drama and animated movies then Frozen is a great movie. I'm getting it when it comes out on DVD, even if I did complain about the ending a lot.

Do you wanna ditch the Snowman? :(

I'd rather the movie be ABOUT the snowman.

Nothing's going to make me see Frozen as anything other than "Tangled on ice with a much weaker story".

And yeah, I watched Tangled recently. I wasn't going to; it isn't aimed at my gender, but I was curious. Better than Frozen? Absolutely.

I don't really see the connection between the two movies.

They are kind of similar.

Anna = Rapunzel (an eccentric, peppy princess that acts like an American teenager) Elsa/Hans = Rapunzel's mother (seem nice at first, but become self-centered antagonists; though Elsa redeems herself) Flynn = Christoph (the hunk) Sven the reindeer = Flynn's horse (the comic relief) Olaf = That green lizard thing (the cuter comic relief) The trolls = Those tough guys in that pub (bot groups sing a goofy song)

Both are princess movies adapted from fairy tales and contain Disney/Broadway style songs, including a whimsical one with not much connection to the plot, with the characters having big shining eyes and eccentric, pantomime-esque personalities. The film's name is a descriptive word related to the story instead of the source material's original name. Like Rapunzel and mother live alone in a tower, Elsa runs off to live alone in an ice castle. Pretty similar movies, if you ask me.

  • both groups, not "bot groups". Whoops.

And I accidentally double-posted. Again, whoops.

Your character comparisons are quite the stretch, where these characters have one thing in common while everything else is quite different. Your second paragraph mostly describes about a quarter of the Disney canon.

Id heard people talk about this Frozen/Tangled thing so I deliberately watched the films in close succession to each other. And frankly the people saying that are doing a huge disservice to Tangled, and Frozen. By comparing Rapunzel to Anna you're missing all the little quirks that made Rapunzel special. She wasn't the peppy outgoing one, Rapunzel was curious and scientific with an innocence and determination that made her seem peppy. Anna is all about people and relationships and making the most of her life. Anna's never going to stare for five minutes at a leaf and Rapunzel is never going to talk to paintings and dance with curtains and anyone on hand.

And Rapunzel's mother and Hans are hugely different. Rapunzel's mother is incredibly unsophisticated and petty in her lack of sophistication. She can't hide who she is and she can't deceive anyone with social skills worth talking about, because she's unable to put her own needs aside long enough to give herself a leg up. She's passive aggressive and sulky and she's basically passive aggressive and sulky from the first moment you see her.

Hans on the other hand has an incredible level of self-control and a cynic would suggest he would be a very good ruler. In fact Hans probably would have been a very good ruler because he wants to manipulate people to the point where he will actually do things they want to get them on side. And he's more dangerous than Rapunzel's mother because you don't need to be locked up in a tower for 10 years to be deceived by him.

See what I mean by it's cheating both films to suggest they're similar? In the end you end up putting them both down just because they contain things like 'protagonists' and 'villains'

Of course not. Disney is contractually obligated to have a talking, Kid-Appeal Character. Also, he wasn\'t that annoying compared to some Funny Sidekicks.
