I think Designated Hero needs to be replaced with Ron the Death Eater, because the internet reaction to Laudna as described in the entry is better fit there.

Admitting for transparency, I'm still a solid 18 episodes behind, so I've not seen the episodes being highlighted that have caused this reaction. However, I've searched up the internet reactions being discussed in the entry, and it seems what's actually happening is a vocal minority of fans are being unfairly critical of Laudna (and Marisha) for behaviour that pales compared to what the others are given a pass on.

This particularly stands out considering that Chetney's assault on a shopkeeper over her prices was both Played for Laughs and isn't listed, not to mention that Ashton's shard manipulations were much more vocally controversial (again, I'm not even at that that part yet but I've heard about that controversy). And of course, the previous campaigns had characters who had similar morally questionable behaviour but aren't getting Designated Hero entries.

Again, seeing discussion on the reactions, it seems the larger fandom is in agreement that the negative reaction to Laudna is more a result of misogyny in the fandom rather than legitimate criticism.

Personally I don't think either Ron the Death Eater or Designated Hero fit, as Laudna's actions in those episodes were never treated positively in-universe, even by herself. Marisha herself stated, while doing that one particular action, that she (Marisha) didn't want to do it but Laundna had to.

RTDE is when a heroic character is turned into a villain in fan works, while Designated Hero is when fans disagree with the author's definition of a "heroic" character. Both are a little murky here as at this point the only unambiguously heroic character in Bells Hells is Orym, but as this entry for Laudna refers to things she did that are unambiguously treated negatively in-universe, I don't think they apply.

I've added your Chetney example to Broken Base as it's been over 6 months and I feel there was legitimate divisiveness on that.

I think that's fair.

Though this is occurring to me that there really needs to be a trope that fits that odd 'the narrative intended for this to be considered unheroic or non-admirable, but fans treat it as a failing on the author because they didn't understand you weren't supposed to agree with them doing this action'. I've seen a few examples, often with Designated Hero entries here or, on other sites, people calling heroic characters out for behaviour they did pre-character development without understanding that it was done because they're supposed to then learn the error of their ways, or just in general treating basic character flaws as irredeemable because they expect heroic characters to be 100% virtuous.

That kind of thing probably broadly falls under Misaimed Fandom. Something related I often see is when fans don't realize a character is supposed to be a Villain Protagonist and champion the character unironically, common examples being Eric Cartman and Walter White. It's not quite Draco in Leather Pants because that's usually when the audience knows a character isn't meant to be sympathetic in-story.

But in general, the Misaimed Fandom pages cover a lot of "fans bash the author/character for an action that isn't meant to be admirable in-universe."
