Is it really, though? Jim's Disappeared Dad is actually mentioned to be a deadbeat who abandoned his family, Nobody Dies and Never Say "Die" are both heavily averted with characters outright threatening to kill one another and actually following through, the main character is a Combat Pragmatist who's not afraid to Kick Them While They Are Down...
It's still a kid-friendly show, but it's about as dark as it can get while still keeping that title. Heck, I've seen actual adult-oriented shows that are lighter than this.
It's hardly what I'd call "heavily idealistic."
