  • Hannibal Has a Point: The Equalists, who claim benders oppress non-benders, are able to command a popular following among the non-bending populace because they're right. The Republic city Council (even the Air Nomads, population 4, get representation) and police force are entirely made up of benders, while political, social, and economic life in the city are dominated by benders.

Sorry, this is stretching things a bit far. Yes, there are four benders on the council and they dominate the elite police units, but between the likes of Hiroshi Sato on the non-bender end and the number of blue-collar living infrastructure on the bender end the Equalist argument seems more a matter of spin-doctoring and scapegoating (note that native benders had no more say in the ruling council than native non-benders).

I don't know. There seemed to be a lot of bending abuse in the first season. Maybe the council didn't overuse it, but the triads definitely terrorized the city, and the non-benders, while they had opportunities, did often get the shaft. Maybe there wasn't a real issue between benders and non-benders, and the whole Equalist movement actually forced a rift open, which in turn justified their cause more and gained more followers. It's been a while, so I'd need to rewatch season 1 again to see just how many instances, shown or mentioned, had benders doing unlawful acts.

Just keep in mind how many of the opportunities Benders get amounts to having useful powers for the task in question. If you can regard such as undue discrimination I advise you to read the story "Harrison Bergeron"

Also, Hannibal Has a Point is In-Universe only. Fans agreeing with the villains would be either Strawman Has a Point, Informed Wrongness or Designated Villain.
