"Neil Gaiman's Signal to Noise features the Nested Story of a group of villagers gathering on a hillside on New Year's Eve, 999 AD."
Is there some in-universe significance to that date? Or is it just that the characters think the world is about to end? Because unless I'm missing something incredibly obvious, nothing apocalyptic happened on Jan 1, 1000AD.
EDIT: OK, it looks like it's Option B. So next question is, is that still this trope?

is COVID really a good example? Nothing really happened that ended anything. in fact, i'm wondering if this trope should even have a real life section.
