"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI almost feel like this article is slanted in the direction of thinking that most if not all of these types of fanfiction are poorly contrived excuses to combine fluff with "the feels". Maybe it's just because I can already think of a certain case where the ending of the series was just asking for one of these thanks to a healthy dose of Fridge Horror.
I know there's a way to do this trope well, but what if you combined it with Rule of Funny (if the "comforter" isn't really good at "comforting", for example), or Rule of Drama (i.e. the entire setting becomes Darker and Edgier once the "hurt" person snaps).
Isn't 'whump' separate from 'hurt/comfort'? I always believed 'whump' indicated that there is a focus on pain, often physical, and that comfort isn't always included. 'H/c' inherently requires both.
