Several of the "Real Life" examples ought to be filed under Parody Religion. I SERIOUSLY doubt that those people are actually worshipping Sponge Bob, for example, and even if they are, it's still not a proper example of this trope because he isn't a figure from a mostly-forgotten society of the distant past, but a figure from present-day popular culture.
Hide / Show RepliesTo me, the page quote has a Legit point "if that's nto worship I don't know what is". Modern people want to deny their deifying ordinary people like the Romans deified their Emperors, but it still that, their just not using the words.
"The US Department of Energy looked for ways to subvert and prevent this from happening at Yucca Mountain and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, as described here, since the very last thing you want people to do with a nuclear waste storage facility is to mistake it for a place of worship... "
You know, if this plan half works, people may think it's an entrance to Hell, or the remains of a killed Eldritch Abomination. Or some other type of Sealed Evil in a Can. Remember one of the Bible's words for Hell came from an old Garbage Site
Edited by MithrandirOlorinWhen I originally came up with this, I didn't have anything in mind for the Trope Namer—I just came up with something off the top of my head. But now I'm thinking that maybe we should give the honorary title to Mortal Engines. Who's with me?

Is Final Fantasy X considered an example of this? That much of this Yevon religion revolves around a sport that was popular 1000 years ago.
