Question regarding the entry for Humans Are Special: The Heptapods want to save humanity now because they know that the humans will in turn save them 3000 years from now.

I don't recall this being in the movie. Was this in the story? If so this has to go somewhere else.

When Louise "talks" with Costello for the last time, he (she? it?) explains to her "what is your purpose here". It happens around 90 minute mark.

It's hard not to recall one of the biggest reveals of the story.

Okay, rewatched the scene with Louise and Costello but there is no talk about this topic. She asked how they can see the future but there is no answer. I am confused.

Are you sure we saw the same film? The scene flat-outs explain everything that's needed.

Just checked the online version. Indded, my copy did not have the subtitles, I thought it was a case of Reality Has No Subtitles.

Removed a very poor example of Meaningful Name

  • Heptapod means "seven feet" in Greek. The aliens are named this because of their seven appendages that serve as feet among other uses.
This is obviously a descriptive name given to the creatures by humans, it has no special meanings.

The You Can't Fight Fate entry makes no sense to me. The heptapods aren't trying to fight fate; the way they experience time means they must know that humanity will succeed in their attempts to learn the heptapod language and that humanity will still be around in 3,000 years to help them with whatever their problem is, and whatever the result of that is. They aren't fighting fate, they're preserving it.

I don't think "you can't fight fate" (at least, the way the trope is described) is about merely "fighting" fate, but about how much it is possible to do it. In this case, I think it is open to interpretation.

Did the heptapods only see the future in which humanity helps them and thus they are indeed merely preserving it? Or did they see a future in which they would need help and went looking for it?

The fact that they're trying to preserve it at all is in itself an example of the trope, because they could choose not to do it, methinks. That would be Screw Destiny, I believe.
