I alphabetized the General Fic recommendations. Sequels are the only exception as I grouped them to be wherever their first entry lands.

I've no clue how to edit the page (lord knows I've been looking), but has anyone considered adding 'The First War' to the Fan Fic Recs? https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8949791/1/Mass-Effect-The-First-War

See those blue buttons at the top of the page? The bottom row should have "edit page" second to the right. Then just copy the markup for another fic recommendation, paste it, and replace all the details with the stuff on the fic you want to add.

Condensed the two recommendations for "And the Meek Shall Inherit the Galaxy." I don't really feel that it is a shipping fic, since that's not what I was really going for when I wrote it. As such, I put both recommendations under the heading of "General," while keeping the comments made by both tropers.

I was just wondering if someone should take down the rec(s) for A Harmless Pastime, considering that it seems to have vanished off the face of the internet.

I'd like to recommend http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7501822/1/Dark_Energy Dark Energy by Melaradark and it's sequels. It is Renegade Femshep/Liara, and goes through all three games and beyond. It incorporates a small number of OC's and some of the plot is changed, but it is done beautifully.

Then recommend it. Format is on the main Fan Fic Recommendations page, and don't forget to link a review using the method provided.

Okay. I'm stumped. Does The Romp Effect go under Crossover or Humor?

I'd like to reccomend [1] by dragondrewversion2. It is a story centerd around four Ocs, set in London as the Reapers attack. The characters are very well done and their interactions feels natural. Opinions?

Put up a rec using the format outlined on the main Fan Fic Recommendations page, and other opinions should show up in the reviews section soon enough.

I also want to recommend "From the ashes", together with http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7260443/1/Madness_Effect (American Mc Gee's Alice), http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8204694/1/The_Warp_is_Calm (wh40k), and http://www.fanfiction.net/s/7966074/1/The_Dark_Space (friendship is magic). And yes, i have a wide range of interests.

Records of an Irken Defective is listed separately under both humor and crossover. I was just going to merge the two, but I haven't actually read it and wanted advice over which category it should end up in.

Just noticed, http://www.fanfiction.net/s/8126014/1/From_the_Ashes From the Ashes. Basically a crossover of the fallout and mass effect universes. Of important note is that the humans don't join the council at all, preferring to keep to themselves and hoard their advanced energy weapon technologies.

Removed (reluctantly- I don't agree with this at all) due to new policy:

  • the kink meme itself
  • sequel to Learning Experiences (I didn't look at it, so I don't know the title but it's on the kink meme and a rare pair so it shouldn't be hard to find through the Delicious index)
  • Overclocking + Data Pulse + Ghost in the Machine
  • Striking + Lose This Channel + I Won't Tell You I Told You So + A Scorched Earth Response
  • Sub-Speak
  • Stability
  • The Lower Reaches
  • Improved Relations (wasn't sure if this counted, since it's more about laughs than getting anyone off, and I hate to remove it but until the admins calm down...)
  • Tails from the Whoremandy
  • Of Tests and Cake + Promises
  • Baby You Can Drive My Car (I know, not porn at all, but I asked and linking to the kink meme at all isn't allowed anymore)
  • Dear Alien Gods Please Save Us All
  • cumshot was a bad idea

Just in case anyone wants to look them up themselves.

Removed (also with reluctance) Heart Like a Rock Cast in the Sea; given the current climate of moral panic, it would probably fall foul of the new morals committee. Here's to hoping that things calm down soon.

I saw the forum post regarding the kink meme thread; if we can't link to sites that host explicit works, we can't really link to any of the major archives.

Would anyone be interested in starting up our own delicious tag bundle for recs that can no longer be made here?

InsanityPrelude Since: Aug, 2009

Yeah, I wasn't sure whether that was Porn with Plot or Plot With Porn. Probably a good call.

I pointed that out in the thread, but no one said anything. I guess it's the difference between an archive that just happens to contain explicit works, versus a meme whose main purpose is explicit works.

I don't know how to use Delicious, but it sounds like a good idea.

So I just went to the main page for Fanfic Recommendations, and it looks like we're doing this wrong. Instead of placing comments in answer to the trope description itself, we should create a separate link for reviews for each fanfic.

Changing the format so that it stays consistent with all fics is a lot of work, and some of them don't even have more than a sentence of commentary. Should we go for it?

Yep, go for it. Limited commentary is just an encouragement to write more detailed reviews.

I'd like to recommend that both Interstitium and Interregnum get their own trope pages. Both of them are easily long and trope-filled enough to support it, and at least in my opinion they're two of the most deserving fics in the fandom. Interstitium only has a few recs here but a lot more reviews on FF.net itself, whereas Interregnum is the other way around, but it feels a little off that the only Mass Effect fics with their own pages are Mock Effect and Renegade.

Thoughts?

Creating pages for fanfics is free. If a fanfic has enough subtance to deserve its own page, go for it.

Should 'Wild Effect' (the Ranma 1/2 crossover) be moved down to the Humor/Crackfic/Satire section, now that we actually have one for this page?

idk about anyone else, but I think it's more of a crackfic than a gen fic, but as they say... Your Mileage May Vary.

Yeah, we should probably put it on the ME page proper. Under the crossover section, though.

Some things I want to discuss:

  • I tried reorganizing the shipping fics, to regroup them by pairing. Of course, this means that some fics are higher now on the list while some are lower, and there's still too many fanfics to find exotic pairings easily. Perharps we should make folders for the most popular pairings?

  • What are the criteria on deleting recommendations? I've restored one, but the recommendation was kinda controversial, and there are some humor fics that just aren't of the quality we're looking for (I might be guilty of this, too). Thoughts?

  • Lastly, I would like some help sorting this fanfic I just wrote a recommendation for:

Manipulations by akg.writes

  • Recommended by Tropulastic
  • Pairing: Female Shepard/Kaidan Alenko (though this is just one part of the story)
  • Status: Ongoing (with regular updates!)
  • Synopsis: Shepard, a Spacer/War Hero Soldier, has newfound biotic powers, thanks to the Lazarus Project. She has no idea about how to use them though, so a certain L2 biotic is hired to be her teacher. But things won't be easy: Shepard and Kaidan aren't on good terms, and neither are Alliance and Cerberus officers for that matter. They'll all have to work together, as there are bigger interests in play. And why was Shepard turned into a biotic?
  • Comments: The plot is of good quality and Original Flavour, and just for that it's worth checking, even if it takes its time to kick in. However, the fic's true strength is characterization: all characters feel like their in-game versions (and just like them, they're badasses who are very good at their jobs, first and foremost). Shepard, Kaidan and Miranda stand out though: their behaviors and actions are carefully examined, compared, contrasted, and their points of view make for an entertaining read of the fic's events, as well as give access to their hidden depths and eventual character development during the story. As for the romance, their relationship compares their past and their present, which makes it fluffy and bittersweet at the same time... but deep down, they still care for each other. Overall, it's a sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes heartwarming, mostly fun ride, and if you like snarky writing and long fanfics, you'll love every second of it.

I'm not clear if it should go under Shipping Fics or GenFics; I've placed it under Shipping just in case, but I'm not sure. The romance is an important part and motivation of this fic, but it's at the forefront in some chapters, not at all in others, and background stuff in the rest. So... help please?

Honestly, I think it's getting to the point that someone should just folderize the page for the Gen, Shipping and Comedy fics in general . It's getting long -but not unruly-, but adding folders for (almost) all the pairings on the page under the sun would make it unruly.

As for deleting recommendations, that's a tough one. I'd say when there's a considerable amount of negative reviews (like, 3:1) then it should be considered... but as the old saw goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Should sequels to fics already on the page be recommended as well?

I've got nothing against it being there, just wondering. It would be like recommending the Lord of the Rings books separately.

Depends how different it is from the previous work, I guess. For instance, if it's clearly part of an overarching series pursuing the same concept and plotline, it should probably just be one entry. If it does something weird like going all Mega Crossover, or otherwise shifts radically in mood and content, separate entries are probably better.

Good point.

I'm thinking of maybe removing my rec for 'Iuncito: Wrex', not because the fic is bad or anything (far from it), but since Sinvraal is now recced as a general author to check out, it seems redundant to have her rec and 2 of her stories up as it is.

Should "An Unfortunate Mix Up" be on here? Its only recommendation is by its own author, and (apologies to said author) while there were a few lines that made me smile, I generally have to agree with the comments saying it's not that good in the first place.

I must agree. It is a decent read, but not the caliber that Fanfic Recs kind of calls for.

Besides, don't the rules state you can't put your own stuff here, that it has to go in TroperWorks?

Troper Works is being phased out. Creating a page for your work in the Fanfic/ domain should be fine, though it's advised that the author stay away from the subjective tropes. Littering an entry on your own work with crowning moments and so on is a tad gauche.

Putting your own fanfic in that namespace is fine, now. Putting it in Fanfic Recs isn't, tough I suppose if you put 'author' in brackets after your name when signing, it might be tolerable, since then everyone would know just how much your recommendation was worth.

Yeah my problem wasn't that it was on Troper Works (or even that it was So Okay, It's Average, really), it's the self-recommendation.
