  • TLOK Book 3: Korra is down for the count, poisoned by Zaheer and the Red Lotus. But Jinora tells Suyin Bei Fong that the poison is metallic. Suyin manages to metalbend the poison out of Korra's body (even though that's not how metalbending works), saving her life - though she's still wheelchair-bound, two weeks later.
  • TLOK Book 4: A nearly-defeated Kuvira tries to kill Korra with the damaged spirit cannon. Kuvira ends up on the wrong end of the cannon just as it's about to fire. Korra jumps in and manages to counter the previously-unstoppable energy blast with her own energy. The resulting conflict rips open a new Spirit Portal - which also allowed Korra and Kuvira to ride out the resulting explosion safely.

Are these examples of Deus ex Machina? If not, why?

Given they were able to bend the metallic poison into Korra, it's not an example. It was shown to be possible, it's seeming contradiction of established rules is a separate problem.

Why would the first be? We see Metalbenders metalbend the poison into her. It's not a Deus ex Machina that someone metalbends it out of her. That's just a logical progression.

Second one is, though. While "energy bending" is sort of a thing, it's never been done at such a scale or with this kind of energy. It's a new ability that appears to resolve an unresolvable situation.

Season 4 might count, although I personally think it's a lesser example, as again, energy-bending has already been established somewhat.

I don't think Season 3 counts, though - when it says it's a continuity error, are they referring to how Toph first discovered metal-bending by sensing the fragments of earth in the metal? Are we certain that would be a limitation here?

Oh God! Natural light!
