If it is to fix typos and broken links, it fine to edit such entries. Anything more than that usually requires approval, as it changes the entry. I'm not sure about adding links (such as to a newly-launched trope), though.
In the days before Complete Monster edits were sandboxed, I edited one entry on the work's YMMV page to fix a misspelling, and then I took it to the locked pages thread to fix the version on the CM subpage, and nobody objected to it.
As for adding potholes, you should probably run that by the thread first.
Is it allowed to edit entries which need to be approved by a thread to fix typos or add wicks, or do proposals to edit such entries need to fly by the thread as well?
