I personally don't care for them, but there's nothing wrong with them.
I like when character page images are all the same size, but borders aren't really required for that.
According to the history of the page you showed me, the pictures with those borders have been there since October of 2017. Why are they raising a stink about it now?
EDIT: The troper in question, by the way, is rjd1922.
Edited by ArctimonI do not know why they are either; those type of images have been used for the characters in Star Wars, MCU, etc. for years now and I don't think anyone else has made a fuss about it since. I understand that the border is eh but I feel that if all the other images have them mind as well include it. Standardization is nice which in my opinion makes the character pages for those franchises look better.
The issue isn't that the images have black borders, though I do think they look better without them. The issue is that emperormasakado and at least two other users replaced images on characters for Fullmetal Alchemist, Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, RWBY, and the aforementioned Anakin Skywalker. And I don't understand emperormasakado's "standardization" justification, considering none of the Harry Potter character images had borders until they started replacing them just this month.
Keet cleanupThe Fantastic Beast Characters, which is part of the Harry Potter franchise, have borders in their images, which I was planning on continuing with the Harry Potter ones until you removed them. And the aforementioned Anakin Skywalker image, like Arctimon mentioned, has been there since October of 2017. And your issue is entirely about images with black borders, "though I do think they look better without them." The images uploaded were better quality and from official websites but you disliked it because the borders were added. And the FMAB characters have had black border images on them for years, just not in the 300x300 format. Regardless the "standardization" justification most definitely applies to DCEU, MCU, Star Wars, and RWBY considering that they have had bordered images long before I started uploading any and many users besides myself continue to follow that image formatting.
Edited by emperormasakadoConsidering that Fantastic Beasts is a spin-off and that Harry Potter predates it by years, I think you should look to those pages for any precedent.
If the new images are higher-quality, then yeah, upgrade away, but if they didn't already have black borders, don't add them.
Edited by PrimisI'd pick standardized 300x300 any time over, say, gen:LOCK's obnoxious 350x800.
"They played us like a DAMN FIDDLE!" — Kazuhira Miller, Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom PainApparently for the Star Wars character sheets there was discussion regarding images and it was decided that standard image format for the character sheets should be 300x300 with a black border. I presume this style was adopted by the MCU as well, so I see no problem in continuing to use them for Star Wars characters, if not other character sheets.
I'm OK with leaving the borders for character images that have them now, but I don't think works whose character pages don't have borders now should have the images replaced. Leave the Harry Potter pics alone, and start an IP thread before doing a large-scale images overhaul like you did with FMA.
Keet cleanupLet me add something - if a page already has pics on it, an Image Pickin' thread is required to make changes to those pics unless you're only doing a quality upgrade.
Hi guys, me and another user have gotten into a debate regarding whether it is fine to upload character images that have border frames, which have becoming an unofficial standard in certain character pages (DCEU, MCU, Star Wars, etc. having framed 300x300 images) The other user argues that they're ugly and unnecessary, I feel that they don't detract from the image and follow the standardization of the rest of the images within that media. For example, the recent edit on Star Wars – Anakin Skywalker.
