As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site. Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it. Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.

Important things to know:

  • We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
  • Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
  • Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.

I agree with you. I also wish there was a third option to hatting and bombing — bombs are supposed to be "this isn't ready to be launched", but there's no way to distinguish between "this has potential, but isn't ready to be launched" and "this has zero potential, so let's discard it". Maybe add a "flag for discarding" option that can be used for troll TLPs and TLPs that have been deemed unviable? I'll make a wishlist entry for that.

Edit: After thinking about it for a while, I believe hat reasons are unnecessary because almost every valid one will be some variation of "it's ready to be launched", "it follows the guidelines", etc. However, I still think bomb reasons would be useful — there are multiple ways to mess up a TLP (bad trope name, unhelpful definition, bad formatting, zero-context examples...), so it'd be nice to let the sponsor know what is wrong.

^ You would think that about hat reasons, but it's not true, as a lot of people either hat their own (underdeveloped) drafts or just use hats as a show of support, and there's been incidents of people using socks to give their draft hats or people just outright giving very badly written drafts 5+ hats for no clear reason. If people had to give a hatting reason it'd be extremely helpful to curb misuse. You're right about what the valid reasons would be, but the point is to stomp out bad hatting reasons.

^ I agree that misuse of hats is a problem, but I'm not sure if mandatory hat reasons would be that useful. It would help us catch hats that were well-intentioned attempts to show support, but people and sockpuppets who hat underdeveloped drafts (often their own) to get them published will just write stuff like "the draft follows the rules" even if it doesn't. We could make hat reasons non-anonymous to bust users who try to pull that, though.

^ Yeah, I wasn't even thinking of these reasons being anonymous. Also, if a draft with no laconic, a one-line description and no examples is getting hats that say "this draft should be launched" then well it's pretty obviously BS even if nobody knows who tossed a hat. Best case scenario honestly would be if this de-incentives all wrongly-given hats.

I'd love for this to be implemented. It would further more constructive criticism.

I'm pretty sure the admins are considering something like this now :)

Yes this is on the list to be implemented for bombs, it’s just further down. Most TLP related changes, besides fixes like missing the preview functionality and being able to ping others, will be in the next batch after this current one going live this next week-ish.
