Is "they've gone through it themselves" a genre of fiction?

Genre Savvy is familiarity with in universe fiction and applying it to their situation. ("They're acting weird, in most games I've played that usually means they've been brainwashed")

Taught by Experience is learning something new by doing it. Like a self-taught swordsman.

I don't think it's either.

Properly Paranoid might fit.

Genre Savvy doesn't apply nearly as much as people think it does.

My benchmark is usually to regard it as savvy of a genre, as opposed to savvy within a genre.

If they recognized the brainwashing because it's just like in a story they read or show they watched, that would be Genre Savvy.
