I was browsing a record store in the mid-2000s when I saw a CD where the packaging advertised an unusual promotional tool the artist decided to use. The album had a "bonus disc" that was just the first few songs on the album again, and a sticker on the case explained that you were supposed to give away the extra disc to a friend, who would hopefully like what they heard enough that they would buy the whole album themselves. Thing is I'm 90% sure this was Begin to Hope by Regina Spektor, but I can't seem to find any evidence online about this version of the album having existed. I am at least pretty sure of the 2000s time frame, and I'm under the impression it was some indie artist's first major label release, which Begin To Hope was for Regina.
