To this day I'm frustrated as hell that we never get to know the real Garon.

I've been shilling the Manga starring Leo for a Reason!

I feel like I heard enough about him to get a fairly good picture of what the real Garon is like. Would be nice to see how the real Garon would react to what the Empty Vessel is doing to his kingdom, but I'm satisfied with what I got.

The problem is Show, Don't Tell is too much in effect. So it doesn't help peoples perceptions.

The Something of Nibelung shows the Garon he used to be and he speaks of how much he loved Leo's mom and how cute he was as a kid. Then Gooron resumed direct control a moment later.

I'm also reading an LP of New Mystery and am close to the end now. Some thoughts...

  • I actually kinda like Kris/the Avatar. In a series where the vast majority of main characters are blue-bloods, having the perspective of someone who starts as a commoner and rises up in the ranks is pretty interesting.
  • Despite the fact that this version brought back everyone from the first game, including those that the original Mystery dropped, you still can't save Lorenz, Boah, or Hardin. The last of these particularly sticks in my craw because Marth wants to save him. And also because you can save freaking Michalis in this version.
  • Oh hey, speaking of Boah, the entire plot was essentially kicked off because he thought the Archanaeans wouldn't accept rule by a woman, even if that woman was the direct heir. Uhhhhhhhhhh maybe I don't want to save you, Boah.
  • The chapter where you have to recruit the Wolfguard in a chain looks as though it makes Ninja Hell and Fugaland look like a game of hopscotch in comparison. Why are they all weaker than their generic subordinates?
  • I really like Dolph and Macellan and I don't know why.

[up][up]Honestly, it didn't really hurt my perceptions, but I'm aware that that's just my own personal experience. I really don't mind that we didn't see the real Garon, as much as I would've liked to, and the knowledge that the real Garon was a good guy helped give me more context on why the Nohrian siblings act the way they do.

[up]If there's any way for you to play the game, I recommend that you do. I had a lot of fun with it.

I really wonder why you can't save Hardin, though. Marth actually has that as one of his objectives in the game itself. And, uhh, he fails. I thought correcting things like that was why Updated Rereleases exist?

"Correcting" implies that it was a mistake the first time around. As I understand it, Hardin's story is supposed to be a tragedy - saving him kind of defeats the point.

My issue is really more narrative-wise than character-wise. The idea of saving him is explicitly brought up several times, then we suddenly switch to "Nope, too far gone" in... a fashion I thought was extremely abrupt.

It's a video game. You should always have the option to save a former friend. Although that's more of my thing than anything else.

I almost feel sorry for Kris. The OG playable avatar in a generally well-regarded game, yet gets no love from anyone (including IS) while Robin and Corrin get to run around in swimsuits and meet Mario. Such is the life of being trapped in one country.

I am curious about how a reformed Hardin that managed to stay alive would interact with the other characters, especially after Nyna gets rescued.

Sacred Stones did something similar with Lyon. Everybody wants to save him but it's stressed that it's "impossible." That SEEMS like it should be a Chekhov's Gun to me, but it... isn't.

@Sterok: There's also the one persisting opinion that Kris was a badly done Avatar, worst character in the franchise, like being a total Marty Stu/Mary Sue. And no one seems to want to defend them or clarify about their traits (in a calm, composed, intelligent way) when there's someone who gets REALLY FIERY in expressing the hatred and talk shit about them based on hearsays.

Yeah, Kris is doomed.

Speaking of Hardin, though... I may have noticed something.

You know, Marth was a candidate of ruling Archanea with Nyna right before Mystery. But Nyna decided against it and chose Hardin instead. You want to know why? ... Because Nyna was good friends with Caeda, and she's attempting to ship the Marth-Caeda pair.

So maybe Hardin's fall from grace happened because Caeda exists. Although that was preceded with how Boah pressured that Archanea needs a successor and Nyna gotta marry.

You can find candies supposedly made by Kris lying around in Awakening. I wouldn't eat thousand-year-old candies, would you?

Boah's whole thing about Nyna marrying is especially strange because Nyna herself was the heir. In real life even societies that always favor male heirs over female would typically allow a female ruler if she had no male siblings.

I thought people hate Kris because they're an avatar & (the most glorified & over used criticism) Mary Sue? From what I read Kris isn't nearly as bad as Corrin but I still don't know everything about Kris.

I hate how much that logic make sense. Unless you're Gonzalez

It's a video game. You should always have that option.

That would be one of hell of a call back

Yea, it's hardly surprising why Mark is use so often in Blazing Sword fanfics. Too bad half of the time they're Mr.Perfect in them.

Honestly, Corrin's problem is more of being a bad avatar than actually being a bad character.

On the 100 years old candy: That actually sounds pretty legit.

I think Corrin's problem is that he's an attempt to combine an avatar with the main character of the story... which turns out not going too well. In theory it could go well... BUT due to Fates' weak story execution, it fell flat onto their faces.

Robin and Corrin aren't really self-inserts; they're characters that would exist anyway that happen to be customizable.
