There is a difference between "See something, report something" and abandoning a friend at your earliest convenience. Human interactions are a lot more complex than the internet wants you to believe, things said or done between friends (especially when under the influence or having a mental health episode) will not fly when shown to the public at large, since it was never meant to be public. And that is where Twitter and podcasts are often the worst thing possible for any public figure.

Do you not know that in the service one must always choose the lesser of two weevils!

Same shit happened during the Black Lives Matter movement last summer when black people were calling all white people “racist” for not speaking up about racism, and when they do, they say shit like “don’t speak for us”. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Yeah, it's crazy how those nasty black people did this, treating every white person unfairly for just trying to help and all.

I don't know what movement you were watching, but a great deal of BLM protests were multicultural efforts - and, indeed, continue to be into the present.

A lot of these situations are complex from the POV of a friend. I've known people who are friends of sort of popular people who got "cancelled," albeit for reasons of shitty business practices as opposed to flagrant racism. Every situation's a bit different, but most of the time it's obvious when you can't afford to stand up for somebody anymore, or even continue being their friend. And if somebody's just spouting racist shit and doubling down on it...I don't think they're worth defending.

Anyway, if Matt and Trey wanted to make a real point about the cancelled people themselves being sympathetic, I feel like they would have chosen a more sympathetic character than the joke character they haven't really focused on in two decades. It has nostalgia factor but not much else.

BTW, the ending of that episode was eye-rolling. Or at least the reaction to it was. Oh yeah, South Park totally chewed out The Simpsons for having racist stereotypes. Just gotta ignore everything else about South Park.

[down] And yet every news outlet reported it as "South Park takes down The Simpsons!" because it was played as a Take That! to The Simpsons. They never acted like calling The Simpsons out as perpetuating racist stereotypes or whatever was inaccurate.note  So if their intention was to criticize the documentary, then they couldn't even do that right.

[up][up] Not my intention and I don’t really give a damn about people of my own race. My point was the ridiculousness of what to do in that situation. I mean, personally, I don’t even think white people should be protesting racism. Asians, black people, Muslims, natives, Mexicans, you name it since they’ve experienced things we’ll never experience. We get shit wrong and we make it about ourselves. We just screw up too much. Choosing to be silence about this doesn’t make me or you racist; it’s just lack of understanding.

[up] They said in the commentary that the Simpsons joke was a Take That! at the documentary about Apu and stated that they weren’t against the show at all.

I disagree but also I totally get it. I like him mostly cuz I project onto him. tongue

I think Kenny's the best character of the show ever since the Mysterion stuff came out. He's still a bit inconsistent but when you think about everything he's been through, he's utterly fascinating.

Stray reaccs:

  • The "come say it to my face" gag was actually pretty funny. Even if I'm unsure of how to feel about how they seem to depict the Stotches as "sooooo concerned about COVID that it's annoying."
  • Mackey's back, that makes me happy!
  • Gnomes are back, which makes me feel nothing in particular.
  • Goddammit, did Butters get brainwashed into alt right rhetoric again?
  • There's a chance Red might have some relevance so that's intriguing. Even if she's, you know, a cultist.

Butters is easily swayed by whoever talks to him. Let alone the alt right who prey on people who feel alienated

[up]That's Red! One of the more prominent background girls. Hopefully she'll get some personality in this special. That'd be neat.

[down] True, but that's not saying much when only Wendy, Bebe, and recently Heidi have gotten any real character focus.

Is the "Little Qties" T-shirt a reference to the Cuties film controversy too? If it is, that's kinda unnecessary since people already stopped caring about that. Might as well put a reference to the Uzaki-chan anime controversy too if they want to talk about useless internet drama tongue

By the way I wasn't expecting to see Scott Malkinson among the Qties, then again he's pretty weak-willed so it does make sense. Also I bet that Mr. Mackey needs to have a specially-made mask, what with that huge head of his!

"Effective Altruism" is just another bunch of horsesh*t.

I was expecting a reference to Butch Hartman, considering he's rumored to come back to Nickelodeon to work on the live-action revival of the Fairly OddParents, and the controversies of OAXIS, art tracing, mocking Mary Kay Bergman, and curing autism by praying.

Why haven't Matt and Trey mocked him already?

Speaking of Mary Kay Bergman, here’s a fun fact: she was really good friends with fellow Disney veteran Robin Williams. They met during What Dreams May Come. After her suicide due to depression, Williams was heartbroken and decided to sing her song, Blame Canada, at the Oscars (he was a huge South Park fan and a personal friend of Marc Shaiman, the co-writer of the song, too). Disturbingly, Williams committed suicide out of depression, too (there was him getting a rare neuro disease but that was the last straw). The definition of Tear Jerker.

[up][up] Presumably because Hartman is only really known within the Western Animation community, modern South Park only really covers issues if they are stuff everyone would know about (Like political figures), or things that effect South Park specifically (such as the Yaoi Fangirls).

I haven't seen anybody give a crap about Butch Hartman outside of the niche cartoon community because nothing he's done has gone far enough for anybody outside of that community to care. Yeah he's garbage, but compared to everything else happening in the past year, he's nothing newsworthy and the main South Park audience won't pay attention to him. Those other two adult shows are direct competitors to South Park so it makes sense to satirize them.

As for the Qties / Cuties thing, I highly doubt it's a reference to Cuties. If they wanted to parody that, they'd make it more specific. Plus, the demographic that defends Cuties and the demographic that joins Qanon is incredibly polar opposite, so the satire would probably crash if they tried to combine those topics.

[up]Since when tackling two opposite topics has ever stopped South Park? It may be just a coincidence, sure, but as far as I can remember Q used Cuties as "proof" that the whole entertainment industry is ran by pedos.
