I'll soon download this Venetian Snares album. I'm not familiar with his work much, but I know that he is Hungarian, and hey, the album I recommended to the list (Local Broadcast) is also by a Hungarian artist (a band actually), Zagar. Just thought I'd mention it.

Hey guys. Would any of you be interested in kinda folkish, acoustic songs? I found this stream of a band/person called Giant Sand here. It's alright I think. The instrumentals are good, but the vocals aren't that exciting.

Funnyguts. Look at the albums posted in this thread. Do you really any of us give a hoot about genres?

Ah. Burns and Covertino (aka the guys behind Calexico) used to be members of Giant Sand.

Anyway, I know what I'm nomming for round two.

We weren't, but I guess it's fine to start listing them now, so we have a list by the time it matters.

Mine is Robin and Linda Williams - Devil of a Dream. They aren't the best of the genre, but they're the first I found, which gives them a special place in my heart.

Anyway. Track-by-track analysis of Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding

Track one: Uh, okay, wow. This is just all over the place isn't it?

...

I don't think there's much I can say about this, other than that I'd be enjoying it more if there were a more consistent rhythm behind it.

Track two: I like the way this song starts. Nice little melodic-sounding things. Once the beat drops, it starts sounding a little similar to the first one. It gets much better a minute in, I really like this one.

Track: Kinda forgettable aside from the ending.

Track four: Ooh, I like this one. The synth bit in the background are kinda nice. Still kinda similar sounding.

Track five: This one is much different. It sounds a lot more mellow than the other songs. Lot less glitchy sounds, and more regular pads. Although, I hear this is supposed to be one of Venetian Snares' least harsh/dissonant albums.

Track six: Starts off more ethereal-sounding than the others. The glitchy sounds as beats are starting to lose their novelty. Still good.

Track seven: Oh man, he didn't even bother with any buildup here. I'm pretty sure I've heard all the rhythms on this song somewhere else in the album, though.

Track eight: A lot less dense then the other songs, and therefore a standout. Also good. There's a lot of "good" on this album

Track nine: Sounds a lot more... digital than the others. If that makes any sense.

Track ten: Heh, I was expecting something that sounded a lot more like shattering glass from the name of the song. A little forgettable, but sitll a nice listen. No wait, it gets different in the last 3 minutes.

Track eleven: This song passed almost completely beneath my notice.

Track twelve: Starts off on a rather mysterious note, and stays that way. Pretty cool. Oh and it actually had something that sounded like vocals on it!

Track thirteen: This is a nice change from the rest of the album... Sounds a little like one of those tunes that plays out of a child's music box, only good and with reasonably audio quality.

Track fourteen: The sudden stops in the rhythms at the start make some nice buildup. The rest of the song is a lot... darker than the others, and that is not in anyway a bad thing.

I don't know why, but I was convinced that he's Hungarian... Nevermind, my mistake...

Most likely because of his album Rossz csillag alatt született.

All the track titles are in Hungarian as well.

Listened to Venetian Snares once. Seems well-done for what it is, but I didn't enjoy it. I'll give it another listen tonight.

Right now, I'm going to check out that album with the Hungarian title, because I remember being intrigued by wikipedia's description of it.

Anyway, my nom for round two is Mosaic by Woven Hand.

This album sounds like a sci-fi novel on tape with all the words removed.

I've yet to figure out if this is a good thing.

So, I'm currently getting an ERROR 500 page for Billy Talent.

Currently downloading Venetian Snares. Should start commenting on it within the hour.

I'm currently having troubles deciding on the next album. I have it narrowed down to three....

^That's my fault, sorry. In my defense, I checked the link right after I posted it and it worked. Meta Four posted the real link here.

Note also: The tracks are not in order, not all tracks are present, and there are tracks from other albums.

Double posting for my album analysis.

Man I did not like this one. As I was listening to it, I realized it was because I've heard everything that this album was trying to do done better (or maybe I should say done well). I've heard synthesis done better. I've heard that stutter percussion done better. I've heard trip time (a name I made up for when a song seems to go in a straight time signature for a while, but every once in a while stutters or trips in time, causing a short of stopping effect) done better. I've heard those concepts combined better. It was a chore for me to get through it, and that's very rare for me (for perspective, I can't say that about any of the other albums I listened to for this thread).

Let him stew as he reads this thread. Which he probably does.

Yeah, gonna go with arks on this one. Too much ambition, too little execution.

Just started the album.

Track 1: Reminds me of a certain pokemon glitch. Yeah, I've heard better (intentional) glitch music.

Track 2: I enjoy the harpsichord(?) intro. Adds a nice flavor. The glitch stuff on this track is much more interesting. It lacks dimension, though. Everything sounds hollow and metallic.

Track 3: Generally, it's nice when one track flows into the other. It's a sign of good composition and is aesthetically pleasing. This is not the case. I didn't notice the track change because this track sounds just like the last one.

Track 4: I noticed the change in track this time. There's a much more defined melody behind the glitch. The glitch is overdone in this one. Too much happening, it's giving me a headache. About halfway through, it mellows out and is actually quite pleasant.

Track 5: Much more melodic. Probably my favorite track thus far. It's not too busy, either.

Track 6: A very inconsistent beat, and it's not just because of the syncopated time. It's very misleading, and sounds very dissonant. Not sure if that was the intent. This track doesn't flow. And every thing clashes with the background. Currently my least favorite on the album so far. The end of the track is slightly redeeming, though.

Track 7: I like the call and response that is implied by the panning. I think this is the first track on here where the tones in the glitch accurately highlight chordal tones, too. So, kudos. The distorted voice is a turnoff, though.

I'm halfway through the album, and I'm not sure how much more of this I can take. Most of this just sounds like glitch-wank to me.

Track 8: More distorted voice. This is one of the more distinguishable tracks. But I don't like it. It's one of the few pieces that doesn't focus on syncopation thus far, but it's terribly cliche.

I gave up commenting on the rest of the tracks.

Overall, It's not terrible. It's not great either. Most of the glitch and such that I've heard differentiates their songs by using different textures of sounds, different roundnesses and softnesses, graininess and such. You frequently wouldn't here a sound from one song within a different song without it being heavily modified. This album didn't do any of that, and so everything sounded repetitive.

It's that time again. There are two albums left, including this one. We will listen to the other one Wednesday night or Thursday morning, or maybe not. Do we want to accelerate the time a bit for these last two?

Random number generator says "2", which is Relient K - Forget and Not Slow Down, which was suggested by Hopeless Romance, who hasn't posted since she suggested the album. Actually a lot of people seemed to have disappeared, although we did gain a few as well (hi, Sati). Maybe we should start recruiting?

Anyways, I used Google to find this link. I checked, and it looks legit. The track numbers are in the ID tags, but aren't part of the filename (In other words you may want to use a player that recognizes track numbers (unlike WMP (bleh))).

The other album is Owen Pallet - Heartland, which was suggested by our great founder, Saeglopur (may he do well on his thesis).

Hi all!

This post is just to say two things:

1) A MASSIVE thank you to Arks for taking this over and keeping it going while I've been bogged down with stupid dissertation work *grumble grumble*, choir rehearsals and (I kid you not) rehearsals for the university Gilbert & Sullivan Society. And thank you to everyone else for continuing to comment and listen and all the rest of it.

2) Friday was the first mini-deadline for my dissertation, so for the next week or so I'm slightly less horribly busy. In fact, tomorrow, I have one of those rare things in the life of a final year student - A DAY OFF. I shall use this precious day to listen to, and comment on, all 5 (I think it's 5? Possibly even 6, I don't even know) albums that I've missed out on. Please hold me to this promise, if I fail you can hurl abuse at me, send me angry messages etc.

EDIT: Also, having just read through arks' last post again, it might be a good idea to necro the thread that was made for this in the Music Board, seen as that's the place we'll get the most people interested. In fact, I'll go do that RIGHT NOW!

Oh, and I've got something in mind for Round Two as well.

Over 'n' out.
