Lacus' problem is We're constantly told She's a great leader... She never really shows that she is. I mean in large part Lacus is portrayed as naive and fucking stupid and only gets by cause she attracts Hyper competent people to her.
I don't think we're supposed to believe that Lacus is a "great leader" in terms of like, the actual nuts and bolt of battlefield command or political administration. She's an orator and an inspiration to others, but more of a mascot than a leader. She gives speeches that sway the people and rally the troops, but she doesn't ultimately call she shots — she leaves that to other people with actual experience.

The naivety I generally chalk up to either Obfuscating Stupidity or Early-Installment Weirdness, since she only really appears painfully naive in her first appearance in the opening episodes of the show. I tend to prefer the Obfuscating Stupidity explanation since a lot of the "dumb" things she does are awfully convenient, but if you want to read her as The Fool who gets retooled into something more serious in her later appearances, it's hard to argue that that's wrong.

Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.

We're not mocking her intentions

We're mocking her Actual ability to do what people want and look to her to do.

You know, I actually wonder how the hell Waltfeld survived his LaGOWE exploding and who the hell rescued him so that he could be the tactical officer of Lacus's flagship.

Because when he lost to Kira's Strike, it seemed very unlikely that he would come back.

[up] Waltfield survived because he had fans. His girlfriend Aisha stayed dead because Vivian Hsu, who sang the second OP song, bolted because she was most likely too expensive to keep.

They really need to stop with the Stunt casting...

It always leads to them having to kill the character... Shiho dodged a bullet there remaining a mute

"Hahenfuss" BTW is not a name. That's either the name you give to someone throwing a tantrum by laughing like a loon or the sound I make when I eat something way too spicy.

Yeah fun fact

Hahnenfuss/Hahnenfuß is The German word for Buttercup, ya know The Flower

which would make sense with Her nickname, 'Housenka' or Touch-me-Not

then again This is the the Franchise with OFF the wall names

Revive Revival or Bring Stabity

and of course

Prayer Reverie

Nearing the final stretch of ZZ and one of the central conflicts is really grating on me. I don't like the whole "kids vs. adults" angle that the series is trying to push. I get that it's marketed to kids and shows like this have the whole kid power vibe but it's honestly really annoying especially when they Gundam team get so high and mighty about it.

What's more annoying is that this could have worked. It reminds me of Quattro's words to Kamille about how his generation have screwed up so badly it's up to the future generations to fix what they did wrong but the show goes about it in such a poor way. It's annoying that the conflicting characters are all just strawmen whining about how adults are better and those dern kids need to stop and then they just embarrass themselves and show how much more skilled the heroes are.

And I really hated Judau's argument with Madchar. I get it, Madchar's being a dick, he's not managing his mobile suits and dismissing Judau and the team's efforts, but Judau does not get to compare him to the Federation officials in Ireland. He's comparing the assholes who rolled over for fascists and were willing to let hundreds of thousands of innocent people die all to control the population to the guy who's trying to organize an underfunded and severely undermanned resistance against those fascists. It's a really shitty thing to say, and Madchar isn't wrong. The Gundam team kind of did get one of their officers killed because of their greed, and Beecha and Mondo betrayed the group twice, then nearly blew up Judau out of jealousy, and then Beecha endangered them all because he wanted to be a badass and took the ZZ away from Judau.

They take the Nahel Argama and actually complain that Bright's threatening punishment if they don't fulfill their jobs? You stole the AEUG's ship! Of course you have to do this. And even beyond how much of a shit he is, why is Beecha the captain? He's never shown any significant command experience. Roux and Judau have, but they're better suited in the field. Beecha is just not fit for the position. Even the episode after has him ordered to sortie because he's more of an asset in the field.

Man, I wish Bright was slapping people again. I'm glad that's being phased out, but damn do some of these kids need a slap.

Though it's not a bad thing per-say, I don't like the major importance placed solely on the Gundam team. The Gundams were important, but the OYW and the Gryps Conflict were both team efforts, Gundams won battles, but it still took the GM's, Nemos, and Rick Dias's to win the wars (super weapons or no). And I miss that emphasis on the collective. But hey, Super Robot genre, this isn't surprising. Hell it is neat that there's a consistent dedicated supporting cast no matter what my feelings are on them.

What I do feel is bad is how the crew doesn't really react to Ple's death. I get that they were annoying but... that was the major protagonist death for this series. It's like losing Ryu or Henken. That's ZZ's major Sacrificial Lion, and it's like they're all fine in the next episode. Nothing. I mean jeez, they were an important member of the team. It's jarring.

Alright I finally started reading Thunderbolt, bought vol of the manga a week ago & I just now finished it.

I enjoyed it greatly, art’s fantastic, & I like how the Zeon forces are framed as more the underdogs because when Io gets that Gundam he becomes a fucking Boogeyman, a literally Goddamn Reaper of Space Death.

I’m like how the fuck is Darryl supposed to fight a Goddamn Gundam? [lol]

Also when is the placement of Thunderbolt along the UC timeline, when was the Thunderbolt Gundam made?

It takes place in the closing days of the One Year War, the first arc does. Before the climatic battle at A Baoa Qu.

So my guess is that the Full Armour Gundam was built from a load of spare parts for the OG Gundam and the Moore Brotherhood modified it accordingly to be able to work in a dense clusterfuck area like the Thunderbolt Sector.

Gundams in the One Year War are basically the Pershings to the G Ms' Shermans - immensely powerful machines on par with the enemy Wunderwaffen that only started being mass-produced near the very tail-end of the war and only saw a few limited engagements against the stuff they were designed to kill. It's implied that the FA-78 was meant for Amuro (like a number of other experimental Gundam projects), but the Moore Brotherhood had enough money and influence to divert it en route to A Baoa Qu.

Gentle reminder that it's not that the machines in Thunderbolt that were modified for the Thunderbolt Sector, but in this specific microcontinuity it's just how the machines look.

Its not like Amuro needed the upgrade, sure Zeon had finally advanced suits to where they could feasibly destroy the Gundam but by that point Amuro had become an Ace on par or greater then Zeon's best

I mean, yeah, but getting him a better machine isn't a bad thing, you know? After all, in the Novel he was shot down by a lucky shot from a Rick Dom. Seeing him in the Alex would've been pretty great.

That said, the point isn't "well, he'll survive anyway." The point is "he'll wreck more of Zeon's shit in a better suit."

I mean, the Thunderbolt Sector suits did have obvious field modifications, like the covered joints to keep debris from getting in. I assume that refers more to the more detailed, less cartoony base design than to the specific equipment they were carrying.

I really like how Gundam Thunderbolt goes about its design philosophy, it seems kinda silly at first but everything they strap onto their suits serves a purpose in some way.

So um, Bernie and Seabook's original voice actor just died a few days ago at age 56: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2018-10-23/gundam-inuyasha-voice-actor-kouji-tsujitani-passes-away/.138518

Damn it, now the ending of 0080 is going to be ever MORE of a Tearjerker if you have the knowledge of this while watching the sub. And this is the final nail in the coffin of Crossbone Gundam ever getting an anime.
