Can we please just go ahead and make the threads before this dies completely?

I'm sorry guys ;-; I've been busy lately, and then lazy with my free time.

I'll make the topics now, each with the title TV Tropes Approved: <insert genre>.

I'll recheck the posts I missed, add any changes (I probably won't for sake of simplicity), and move along.

Can someone please answer to me whether I don't have to recommend an album someone else already did or I still do? I have way too much for metal and three or so of the albums on my list already got nominated, so I guess I don't really understand how it all works.

Once a decent number of submissions are posted, discuss amongst the topic which works are truly essential. Usually these will be the works with the highest number of recommendations in the topic.

Quoting Neccy in the OP of basically every thread.

So yes, duplicate nominations = good and actually quite important for deciding the final list of 25-30 albums.

This is really hard. I always find I draw a blank when trying to pick the best albums. o_o;

It's a challenge, ain't it? ;D

The rest of today should suffice for any future additions for the topics. Then we can all start picking. The albums with the most recommendations (the big obvious one being the My Bloody Valentine album Loveless) will automatically be chosen, but any ties for the single recs can be debated. I think that's reasonable.

The one artist rec per user thing can be dropped for the selection process, because repeated artists will be fine considering that there will be some 25-30albums chosen altogether.

Since this is pretty much dead, I decided to compile what we managed to get.

For threads that never bother to make a final list, I just got all the recommendations and deleted the repeats.

The Musical Theatre and Soundtracks one took longer, because I had to find the composers and lyricists for each album, because soundtrack fans never care about those guys >:(.

I'm still interested in a discussion, at least about what we do with these lists. Making a Just for Fun page for this stuff was brought up earlier, IIRC; that's an option we could take.

Err, that was all already on the Alternative/Indie Rock list.

Also, I think we should purchase some space in the next Trope Report.

Possible solution: Create pretty charts of these albums. Like an array of album pictures for each genre, with the band and album name below.

Oh, sorry. There are some duplicates in the lists, I notice. Gorillaz appears twice, for instance, as does The Hounds of Love.

So, thoughts on why this failed: It was mainly due to the participants taking this as an excuse to pimp their favorite albums, instead of trying to build a definitive/essential list. In other words, a lack of organization. Hell, there were even places where the people out-and-out refused to recommend actual albums and just pimped their favorite artists, like in the Reggae, Dub and Ska thread. The threads that did make final list were, in fact, the ones where the original organizers were participating themselves.

So what I figure is that we can gather around and make a list of bands and albums for several genres (rock/electronic/classical/etc, subgenres can be covered too) that we collectively recommend trying out, either due to how accessible they are, or how awesome they are (preferably both).

So, yeah. Whoever said anything about gathering a list of essentials? It's a fact that Nevermind was immensely popular and therefore became influential and essential, but in here no one, except maybe one person, thought it was actually all that good, so it didn't make the list. And I don't like In the Aeroplane over the Sea and I think it's just awful-sounding hipster garbage, but more people here do like it, so I have to put up with it. It's fair.

Lists of essential albums are everywhere... This is supposed a compilation of whatever tropers more or less agree on being awesome in music. Amirite?

True.

But still, a lot of the participants simply threw their lists in and left.

@Litis: To be fair, just about everyone knows about Nevermind. I wouldn't put that as entry level simply because it's borderline instinct to try them (well, Nirvana) at a point.

I can understand where you're coming from though, and I can understand the overall reasoning for how this failed. I do think it was a good idea, but yes, in the end, most people thought "lol fav band plugin" and dumped their lists, to never be seen again. Such things are virtually guaranteed to happen in a forum setting, so it was more gamble than anything.

We can try this again, although it would need tweaking.
