I think instead of compiling everything into a pinned thread, it might be better to make a page in Just For Fun, if for no other reason than making it easier to update.

No one has to delete anything. It was just a suggestion.

I personally would like to keep this in the Music board. It'll get more than updated enough seeing the activity this forum has.

Oh, some possible guidelines: 1.) one band per album, 2.) bands that cross genres are ok, 3.) everyone can recommend 10 albums per topic, 4.) album limit of 25-30 in the end so that it doesn't turn into some massive list no one will care about, and 5.) albums should be chosen not so much on a I FKING WUV THIS ALBUM basis so much as "I can accept this album at the least and it's essential." Like for instance, I am not fond of Burial's album Untrue by any means (You Should Know This Already if you've seen my posts), but I'm totally for it getting accepted into the TV Tropes canon for great Electronic. #5 is certainly debatable, but I think the other four points are decent.

Why is Musical Theatre and Soundtracks a separate category?

Because it encompasses a broad set of genres which are more-or-less unique to musical theatre and soundtracks, with their own styles and conventions?

I'm not a musical guy, but I listen to a lot of soundtracks, and it can basically all be put in some other categories, excepting some weird stuff like a few tracks from Apocalypse Now and such. That would probably be experimental, really.

Well, musical theatre is definitely its own genre, being an offshoot of light opera which absorbed influences from music hall and ragtime, and later rock opera and pop.

Film score is often reminiscent of Romantic-era classical music, but the compositional style is different, since the music has to synch with the action on screen. It's also in some ways closer to popular music since it's made to be recorded, not performed live, and therefore can do things classical concert music can't, and it also has its own tradition of influences from popular styles like rock and jazz. TV scores are different again, since they often consist of short musical snippets that can be reused from episode to episode, each designed to fit different situations and moods.

And then, of course, video game soundtracks are often influenced by the soundtracks to old 8-bit games, back when there were serious limitations on what a game's soundtrack could or could not do. And again, they tend to consist of many reasonably short cues for various situations, although in game they're often looped.

I'm gonna say this again, if you make a post for each individual genre AND sticky them, it's gonna get really friggin clogged. You're currently suggesting that 13 threads be posted and stickied on the top of this thread when there are 15 spaces at the top. A sticky linked to Just For Fun would be best.

I meant only the results to be sticked. And only a few topics at a time. But I suppose that if the Just For Fun forum is okay for that, that could work. Not that I'd know, I've never been to that particular corner of the board.

Every Beach Boys album front-to-back. Even the later Dork Age ones are great to listen to for their sheer awfulness.

I don't think the Just For Fun forum column is what iama meant, nor is it really appropriate. I suppose we could do this in Troper Covens, but why not here?

As for stickied threads, we need an admin to do that anyway, and there's no way they'd sticky that many threads for us.

I vote we just make them as regular threads, and make them in this subforum. Maybe we could make a Just for Fun page when we're done.

I think that Allmusic has a pretty good breakdown of the major genres. POP/ROCK JAZZ R&B RAP COUNTRY BLUES ELECTRONIC LATIN REGGAE INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL

Of course some people would already separate Pop from Rock and blend Latin,Reggae, and International. I think that we should try to keep the ELECTRONIC label just as is and not include stuff like Metal/Progressive/Roots/Folk. Because then where would we put stuff like Folkmetal?

Umm, I would also be loathe to have experimental being put under its birth genre, particularly if it's genuinely sui genris. Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music? Can's Monster Movie or Tago Mago? Basinksi's Disintegration Loops? Maybe just add an Avante Garde catchall?

When I wake up, I will start creating the topics. I started this, so I might as well keep it going. Topics will be created here in the Music forum.

"Avant garde" sounds better to me than a vague "Experimental" category.

Folkmetal would probably go under metal, since it typically has far more in common with metal than folk.

Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music?

Can's Monster Movie or Tago Mago?

Some sort of rock category; I'm guessing Classic Rock because of the period they were released in, but it's a bit of a dodgy category for them.

Basinksi's Disintegration Loops?

Electronic... maybe.

Post-rock usually goes under Indie/Alternative, as does shoegaze and noise rock.

Neccy 60 was going to start the threads (as you can see above), but he hasn't been on in a few days, so I think we should just make the threads ourselves.

I'll wait until tomorrow to start up a thread; it's getting late, and I want to be less tired when I make my first recommendation.

I'm going to start one of the threads once I think of a good recommendation.

A few things, though: J-Pop: Pop or world music? Or a genre of its own?

And what about soundtracks that have accessible music of a particular genre? (Cowboy Bebop's tendency to be a Gateway Series for jazz as well as anime springs to mind, as do the number of times The World Ends With You's OST has been mentioned on this fora when people ask for an example of good rap.) Should we list them in the Soundtrack thread and reference them in the relevant genre thread, or put them in one thread only?

I say J-pop is pop, because lumping it in with folk and country would be ridiculous.

Not sure on the soundtracks, but bear in mind that we're talking about album recommendations. I don't think anyone would recommend the TWEWY soundtrack as a hip-hop album.
