So I've been editing the various Battle Network pages, and something I saw in YMMV.Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun And Blue Moon really bugged me.

Is Double Soul really considered a Replacement Scrappy for Style Change?

I haven't played the games with Style Change, but from I read they're exceptionally grindy to obtain and have RNG bullshit attached with the elemental affinity assignments. 3 also makes it so you can only hold one Style Change, which heavily compromises the system.

I wouldn't say Double Soul is a perfect replacement, but it's a lot more flexible.

[up] I've only played the fifth game (well okay the Double Team DS version) so I'm not really sure if that's true. I do know that Double Soul allows you to activate Chaos Unison if you have a Dark Chip in your deck; powerful yes but it's turn limit is short and it does come with the chance of Dark Mega Man.EXE showing up to ruin your day.

Not only what [up] said about the turn limit, but they require relying on the chips. You'll have to enter the custom screen eventually for fresh chips. And of course to even activate a soul in the first place means you need to sacrifice a compatible chip that isn't your default tagged chip.

Style Change doesn't have these problems. They can work in conjunction with the chips or stand alone and don't require activation. They're really only grindy if you actively do so.

Also, they were a let down compared to how powerful they were in the anime.

The crosses in 6 are what souls should have been.

That's a poor point against anything from the games given how... loose an adaptation the anime was.

Even so, I thought it deserved a mention. Anime souls were reasonably easier. And I would say the anime was less loose compared to other works adapted from video games. I even daresay the anime was better.

What? No. I mean, you can think the anime is better, that's a preference you can have, but saying it doesn't take tremendous liberties with the source material to the point that it barely qualifies as an "adaptation" is just factually false.

That MegaMan.EXE isn't Lan's brother in the anime says everything that needs to be said.

I’d say it says that the anime is less ridiculous than the games but I know it’s just ridiculous in its own ludicrous way

I'm not saying the anime didn't take liberties, I certainly know it did. Calling it barely an adaptation would go against my opinion of putting the anime above the games.

I saw everything, including the non-dubbed content, so I know about the drastic difference between the games and anime. I'm just saying it did so less than other works based on video games.

Not really? That just means you like the anime on its own merits better than the games. "Non-faithful adaptation" doesn't mean "bad show", necessarily. Some adaptations deviate greatly from their source material and are regarded more highly than it ever was as a result.

This thread got buried for me smh.

I've only played the fifth game (well okay the Double Team DS version) so I'm not really sure if that's true.

I feel like the turn limit is kind of a non-factor? The games heavily encourage optimization to make your battles as short as possible (you're expected to delete bosses with HP in the thousands in less than 10 seconds for postgame completion, plus Liberation Mission fights are 3 turns anyway), and even if you're not the best battler you can probably get by without the Soul expiring too often.

The chip sacrificing can definitely be an issue, but it's not as big as deal if you have a well-constructed folder.

Style Change doesn't have these problems. They can work in conjunction with the chips or stand alone and don't require activation. They're really only grindy if you actively do so.

I mean sure, but it still has its own problems. In addition to the stuff I mentioned earlier, I believe obtaining some chips is locked behind having certain Styles equipped. Which, again, is super annoying when 3 only lets you keep one at a time.

Also, they were a let down compared to how powerful they were in the anime.

I don't know what high standards you're working off of because they're still really strong.

In semi-related news, I recently found out that people still play BN6 competitively.

Been playing Battle Network 5 on my Wii U. Had Team ProtoMan as a kid, so I went Team Colonel this time. Having a blast abusing Bass Cross and Save Scumming in Liberation Missions to get the best prizes.

EDIT: Came across this video of BN6 PVP. I'm not going to spoil how the round turns out, but it's super hype.

I remember as a kid how cool I thought Mega Man Battle Network mods were. I'm hoping that one day there'll be more. Maybe a full on mod that feels like a brand new experience. The Mega Man Star Force series doesn't seem to get much, though an enhanced Romhack called Mega Man Star Force DX was released some time ago.

So I just got Maverick Hunter X digitally on my Vita.

So far I like it but prefer the SNES original.

I find it odd that Maverick Hunter X is available digitally but Powered Up is not. Wonder why?

You know, I have to wonder why Pit is obsessed with this site. It’s gonna ruin his life!

I wish Maverick Hunter was also available to download for the current gens.

>I don't know what high standards you're working off of because they're still really strong.

Anime souls were their own chip and not a sacrifice making them much more practical (I'm quite jealous of the anime characters not having to put with stuff that and chip codes, folder RNG, etc. )

Thought: X3’s golden armor is either a proto version or a straight up ultimate armor

Five muddies the waters a little with the asset reuse but the idea established by 4 and 8 is that the Ultimate Armor isn’t a set thing. It’s the current generation of armor pushed to its absolute peak of power.

The X4 Ultimate Armor is the Force/Fourth Armor with unlimited nova strike and locked in plasma ball buster chip

The X8 Ultimate Armor combined the attributes of both Icarus and Hermes armor branches into one.

The Golden Armor, allowing the use of all the chips, is clearly cut from the same cloth. The only stumble is that it’s not purple since that’s the later commonality.

I’d like to see ultimate versions of the armor generations that didn’t have them. Ultimate armor with the speed of Falcon but power and defense of Gaia.

Ultimate uh hard to say for the first game. But you get the idea.

I think that in the first game, all four armor pieces was the ultimate armor. That was the peak of Mega Man X's abilities at that time.

I got to the end of Battle Network 5 and.

Nebula Gray is kind of awful?

I don't remember it being this difficult as a kid, and I had way less game knowledge and a worse Folder back then. Might have been the first time I lost a fight the entire game. EDIT: I technically lost a ShadowMan Alpha fight using Colonel and got destroyed by one of those Nebula Area guards (since they throw Level 3 viruses at you), but I don't really count either of those since there's no penalty and they're not mandatory.

[up] For what it's worth, the refights against your allies before the final dungeon felt like poor writing though the final dungeon made up for that (even if the declarations of war were hard to take seriously).

It took me a few tries with Nebula Gray as well. I had to change my folder because Hockey chips are useless against him, not to mention all the attacks going on. (Also for a boss called Nebula Gray, the only thing gray about the design are it's shackles and chains)

So beat Nebula Gray and Battle Network 5 and moved onto 6. It's going well for the most part, except then I get ridiculously unlucky and stumble onto BlastManEX's fixed spawn point on complete accident. I beat him up since I hadn't saved recently, but then I run into his SP version as a random encounter and have to delete that, too. And all of this happened before even reaching the aquarium, so I'm at 160HP with very little to my name in regards to chips. That SP fight in particular took forever. Got a Busting Rank of 5, at least, since I only got hit once.

An open question: what are the thread’s favorite Sigma first forms?

Jedi? Wolverine? Captain America? Boomerang Grim Reaper? Owns a cool cape but is pretty generic? ZOMBIIIIIE? Has gun will travel? Actually Satan?

X1 Sigma is probably far and away the most Iconic tm Sigma (he’s all over X8 for example) but is he Best Sigma?

I liked X8 Sigma for revisiting the concept of X6 Sigma but in a way that let him keep his dignity. Also if you look closely his scrap body is actually his wrecked X7 one.

I like Reapper sigma since I find them cool and his grey outfit in X5 does make him regal even if I think the fight sucks huge amount of ass.

Now I just want to said I nearly finish playing megaman 8 and....well here are my thoughts.

In many ways, I kinda enjoy this game way better than X series at least in a gameplay terms, some of his levels are tons of fun even if annoying difficult like frost man, Clown man and meteror man can be really hard as shit.

With the bosses....well is hard to said since I have to compared with the time I face them as kid with now near two decades later(I play this game back at 2000) and I will admit I kinda cheat a little bit like using emulator save in order to just load before a battle if I lose rather than just repeating the same level. Depend of you is that is cheating or and anti frustration matter.

So with that said this more or less my list.

Of the first four:

-Grenate man: I will said while I using him as my first boss because his level is easy. He is very difficult to fight for first timers(Which is why I love to fight him as sort of veteran). Since his atacks are fast and he move A LOT. specially his granate that can use horizontal and diagonal direction. What is hilarious is when he destroy the stage and start jumping over you actually does more damage than anything else.

-Clown man: His level is fun if a little bit frustrating at times I like the whole "X and O" think of the second phase. Clown man hold a special place in my heart by how much I fucking sheer hate this guys guts, god I did so much that when I was a kid I totally decide I will beat him without power and I die many many MANY times as result because dear lord this bastard is fast as hell and thurder carnival is dificult to predit(little fun note, I always belive he said thurder canonball even today years after I learn english, ha) when I face him again im surprise how much I still knew about his pattern and how to doge it, it seen all my traing really pay fruit even years later.

-Tengu man: Of all I said this hardest of the four in term of the level and the boss being really hard, which is kind of a paradox because as a child I chose Tengo man as my first boss, in part because is not that easy to use ice power on him do always being in the sky and many of his atacks doing during the air(is kamatari atack being able to throw you outside the fight is deeply annoying) but I like him as sort of Worthy rival for me(My cousin saw him that way and really try his best to beat him as child).

-Frost man: Of the four I will said I dont like this level so much, the first phase is annyoing with the skiing section killing so many times both before and now and the second with all those cubes throwing in my face, on the boss I will said he is probably the easier one to fight since his atack arent that hard to doge and he is pretty big so you can hit him easly. I feel he is a much better walrus men in that regard(and waaaaaay better than wolfgang blizzard).

Of the other four:

-Search man: While I went against Aquaman the first I feel this one should the first, his level is somewhat challenging(and it remind me of web spider a lot) and it actually use previous power like electric claw and others I didnt have much to said about this. On the bost I will said he is perfect mid tear, not overly hard but not overly easy and best to face without the flame sword.

-Aquaman: his level is fucking hard a times but is pretty all right, I like the sub boss you have to fight in a water falls and the way you can just kept going down and down, I remenbering having tons of funs as kid(not so much now when I barely beat him). Aquaman is dear in my heart of the next since once I figure out his pattern(is the jumps he does) he goes down easy but my brother(who actually beat the damn game) didnt ever saw the pattern and strugle way more against him. As a note I will said his presentation of jumping and making his name in a rainbow is the best.

-Sword man: I will said I fucking LOVE his level, the whole temple who have mini phases were you should use previous power is a genius move and make the level feel longer(in a good way since I feel at times the X4 levels can be pretty short) and so far is the best level desing for me(hilariously since in X6 have what many consider the worst fire level ever). In contrast sword man is.....kinda easy? he is slower than clown man and granete man so you can see his power a mile away and he doesn't have anything that is difficult to doge or hit so hard. As plus I like his design and his personality

Meteor man:....I hate it, I hate it all. The good damn vanish plataforms, the diferent section, the weird ass laberyn, the colapsing base in the sand.....is a damn weird ass place and the boss isnt any better, why? because if you want to beat him WITHOUT the power he is hard to hit since his floating all the time but unlike tengu man who mantain himself in a somewhat lower altitude he is near the roof the entire fight unless he atack you with first atack. The other problem his astro blast who can hit like a truck and being near imposible to escape, all boses this is the one who need the power to beat or you are done, in my case I have to use the dog to win the fight.

And that all for most part. Now I have to beat them again, them wally and that it.
