[up] I'd go along with that.

What did the original look like:

Squirrel Genius works in mysterious ways.

It was removed because of the copyright, except the copyright identifies who holds the copyright, so that's not a reason to pull.

Put it back up.

Now, I agree it's not a good image we need a better one.

Note that Mutsume from Love Hina is not an example.

Ditzy Genius is a genius who is also ditzy.

Genius Ditz is someone who is ditzy, but has one area of excellence and expertise.

I think the best plan is to find two pictures. One showing the normal ditzy behavior. The other showing the rare instance of competence.

Have the first caption be: "Under normal circumstances, useless" and the other: "But when the Zombie Apocalyse hits, best person to have on your side". Or something similar that fits the selected example.

I tried a search for Mihoshi from Tenchi Muyo, but couldn't find a picture of her being competent, even though I know there are scenes like that out there.

That's not how copyright works. Announcing who you are stealing from does not make the theft legal.

It is an ownership mark. Like a brand on livestock.

That's not the directions given in other image threads.

I thought we had permission for this picture, and the complaint was it has a copyright notice.

Perhaps I misunderstood.

I'm confused too; I thought we could have a copyright on a pic as long as the person/group/whatever holding the copyright was there with the symbol, especially since that's not the whole strip.

If it wasn't the whole strip, it's cool. I'm just making the point that showing the copyright symbol and it owner's name changes diddly about whether or not it is cool to publish the thing.

Showing the entirety of the work is never cool, with or without a copyright symbol.

If we have written permission we can produce later, a whole work is cool. A note from a troper saying they got permission is not permission. The full text of the email giving the permission is. That's with address routing info and all. We can link to a static copy on our server, and we're covered.

Lot of trouble, though. Much simpler to use excerpts.

Okay, thanks for the further explanation. I think I better understand the policy now.

It's still a poor depiction of the trope though. Anyone found something better?

Can you write what the rules for copyright are down somewhere?

See the second, third, and fourth paragraphs of my last post. It is really just that simple.

You said it was cool for some of the proposed images from cracked in a page where somebody suggested cropping out the logo, I want to say that's where the "signatures are cool" idea came from.

Actually, we should probably have a discussion in something related to copyright, so we don't have a case where policy is informed through a specific thread. It would also allow the discussion to get back on track.

I thought about using all three but I didn't know if it would be too big on the page.

It looks better than I thought it would resized.

Who says it needs to be resized?

On a sidenote, I was considering adding a caption that would comment on the unlikelihood that a battery like that would cause that noticeable a shock just from licking it, and then abruptly shift to Cuteness Proximity based Baby Talk. (Since she's a cat... or a wolf or something.) I think it would double as a way to give the caption a Self-Demonstrating Article feel.

It looks better at that size, but I worry about how much that's going to stick into the examples since the intro's short...both are gonna be intrusive, but full size will be a lot worse.

[up] Yeah, the full size version hangs down past the folder list. I switched it out for the downsized version in the sandbox; it's still way down, but not as bad.

Try it as a two by two box then.

And for the record, she's a squirrel, you just can't see her tail.

Well, seeing what we did with Starscraper, that isn't that bad, although there's no self-demonstrative nonsense to salvage it.

The words above are to be read as if they are narrated by Morgan Freeman.

Yeah, at least there's a reason there.

Can we try another panel arrangement? No idea here, though.

When all the folders are open, the pic is far shorter than the text. Even when just the anime/manga folder is open, it's well past the end of the pic, although there's a lot of natter that could be culled.
