Why is this thread so dead, anyway? I thought PA was supposed to be the big popular webcomic around the internet?
My guess would be "because everyone posts on that comic's forum".

What's wrong with Hotmail? Microsoft is at least not effectively defunct, like Yahoo.

I seem to have accidentally duplicated this thread here, but now that this thread has been recovered from the dark depths of the database, we can continue talking about it here, I think.

I still read Penny Arcade every time they post a comic, but most of them aren't distinct enough to post about specifically. For example, the latest: "Rubrik's Cube"

I'm sure this would get a laugh out of anyone familiar with Warhammer 40K, but for me it's just playing on Gabe being obsessively stupid and Tycho being obsessively pedantic. Which is, admittedly, funny, but not in a "oh, I get that reference" way.

A lot of comics are like that, throwing referential humor at the wall to see what sticks.

Well, page two of this sub-forumtongue

[up]Thousand Sons are the Legion as a whole, which is split into the Rubric Marines (which is what they are talking about) and the Sorcerers (along with the Tzaangor auxiliaries and enslaved psykers but they arn't really members of the Legion).

Tycho's blog post to go with the comic

But yeah

"Because I am nothing if not merciful, I did not discuss the Rubric's true purpose - to guard the doomed XV Legion's bodies against the Flesh-Change. Nor did I emphasize that the sorcerous exile Ahzek Ahriman, once exalted of the Corvidae, still seeks his redemption"

Which is why for a long time it was hotly debated how they recruited people into their legion, since they can't simply 'make' new rubics, also Flesh-Change turned their insides to dust and then they got sealed inside their armour when Ahriman tried to fix them or something

That it's about 40K is almost unrelated to the punchline, I feel. I know I've tried to share my interests with my friends quite a bit over the years. After enough time, certain concepts or ideas might stick with them, but in a way removed from their original context. Moreover, it's likely they dont care about the proper context at all given that they never picked up on that interest in the first place. It's not a particularly funny strip, but its relatable on a certain level.

It's probably the closest thing to a running theme this comic has.

Ummmmmmmmmm... They're a crypto thing that makes people rich. Now hop on the bandwagon you gullible sheep.

Okay, okay. NFT stands for "non-fungible token". They are a method of adding an unforgeable identity stamp to a digital product, such as an image or video, allowing "unique" copies of it to be traded. They supposedly transform a fundamentally fungible article (digital products can be reproduced indefinitely at virtually no cost) into something like a painting that has value because of the scarcity of originals.

...yeah, that's not actually how scarcity works. I mean, I can understand how the makers thought that—what's the difference between the original Mona Lisa and a high definition photo of it?—but you do need people to care about the thing that is now scarce.

The eternal truism of art is that it is exactly as valuable as the highest bidder is willing to pay for it. People do tend to value scarce things more highly, but that does not automatically make scarce things more valuable. Not every digital artwork is going to be worth anything, no matter how unique it is.

And of course a non-fungible token doesn't even need to be the original. People can and do make NFTs out of stolen artwork. The only thing verifying that you own the "original" is the record of you purchasing it from the original artist (or purchasing it from someone who purchased it from the original artist, etc.), which is a concept that has always existed, so really NFTs are a very stupid (and wasteful) gimmick.

I love the meta-humor here, but the joke is premised on Gabe confusing "SEO bandwagon" for REO Speedwagon... I don't know how to feel about that. Abused, maybe?

I was going to say something about the culinary heresy that is Pizza Noodle, but I order a kebab pizza only days ago, so I probably shouldn't talk.

Pizza noodle and kebab pizza are culinary abominations. If one wanted to make the gastronomic equivalent of beholding the spawn of Yog-Sothoth, kebab pizza would be a good effort.

We have pancake restaurants that specialize in pancakes with all manner of exotic toppings. Not sure if that's a thing in the US though, but this place sounds like a similar concept for pizza.

A pancake works for that purpose because it is considerably simpler than pizza. It's just a flat cake.
