Alright, I'm starting this now. We're starting with a relatively small engagement in Eastern Europe. Eastern Alliance forces under the command of General Yoru Munen have begun their advance on the city of Moscow, breaching the Demilitarized Zone of the Ural Mountains. Western Federation High Command has noticed this and put all divisions on alert. General Edwin Krause and his 1st Infantry Division are the first line of defense.

In addition, there are rumors of heavy forces from both sides eying the Middle East as a potential target. The WF already has two divisions there, but the EA has recently moved two of its own divisions into the area around the Caspian Sea, waiting to strike into the desert. Generals Robert Wilkes and James Damon of the Western Federation will face off against Generals Bohai Chao and Shin Rhee.

World War Four has officially begun...

Quick rundown of the rules:
  1. NO GODMODING, NO EXCEPTIONS. Any attempt to godmode will instantly be declared a Critical Failure and be treated accordingly.
  2. Each unit is strictly defined in its abilities. Any attempt to go outside these abilities is strictly forbidden.
  3. The performance of attacks is determined in the same manner as Roll to Dodge, just scaled up for large scale military operations. The die controls your fate.
  4. Some units are designated as "Rapid Deployment Forces". These units can be used to back up any unit on their side at a moment's notice, but it will always take at least two turns unless they're already within the same AO as the unit they intend to reinforce. To compensate for their speed, they are less durable and less powerful.
  5. All covert operations are handled via private message to the Game Master. On a failure roll, they will be declared openly; on a success roll, they will be kept hidden.

Now, LET BATTLE COMMENCE!

General Shin Rhee was not pleased. He was tapping the floor anxiously with his cane and glaring at the map like it would change by looking.

The situation was, admittedly, not as grim as he made it out to be. Based on their intelligence, the enemy was all over the middle east, but their main foe- The one the 108th had been ordered to dispatch- was the 501st. They were the threat, and he had no idea where they were.

Scratching his beard, he overlooked his forces, looking to decide what pieces he should move first.

Most of his soldiers were powerful sorcerors of the elements- It was what the 108th Heavy Assault was known for. However, one of the problems was that these kinds of soldiers were not at all stealthy. Any sensors for finding mages would quickly pick up the power coming off of them, and they all were too important to lose so early.

But a few were different. It was standard practice to include at least a few different types of magic, and Rhee was glad it was. They could not afford mistakes, not against the 501st.

Turning to an aide, he tapped one of the many scrolls in his tent. "Get me an Onmyoji. I need them for a mission."

The aide bowed low and hurried off.

Robert Wilkes looked over the holographic map, his mind already looking at various plans.

He called an officer over.

"Right, I want you to increase the tempo of hearts and minds operations. Give the populace what they want, and show that we're not here to harm them. As well, I would like to conduct nuisance attacks into suspected or known enemy positions. Do so at night. This should reduce enemy morale and reduce their performance. Would it be possible to conduct patrols? Please do so if possible, and have the convoy move in single file; it should reduce any dust clouds thrown up and disguise numbers."

Discontent with the situation, General Edwin Krause looked around the tactical command center. He stared into the blank faces of his subordinates and staff.

"So, does anyone of you care to tell me what we actually know? Rumours have it that the Eastern Alliance is marching for Moscow, that they plan to invade the whole of Europe! We are at the front of a potential war and you are telling me that we don't know what exactly is going on there?"

Despite the fact that the command center was a fully air-conditioned room in a bunker seventy meters below ground level, the officers at the briefing seemed to be sweating.

"I hope that the troops are ready, should we have to intervene."

"The troops are ready, sir, but..."

"But what? We have the responsibility to keep the enemy where they belong. I expect that everyone will do their best to archive that goal. Does everyone understand?"

"Yes, General!!"

The officers all grabbed the documents they had brought to the briefing and scurried out of the room.

^^^ General Rhee: [5, Critical Success] Your aide rushes off, and within minutes has found the unit you requested.

^^ General Wilkes: [5, Critical Success] Your forces commence massive hearts and minds campaign work, winning over practically the whole country. [2, Failure] The nuisance attacks are easily repelled, though few casualties are suffered. [6, Overshot] Your patrols are numerous and very well-equipped, but civilians don't like having so many soldiers around. Some hearts and minds operations fail as a result.

^ General Krause: [2, Failure] Most of your forces fail to arrive in time. Moscow has fallen.

General Rhee looks over the mages that were assembled. Most are flowingly dressed, long-bearded men, with overly elaborate names he can't be bothered to remember. "You all are practicioners of the magic art of Onmyodo?"

They nod.

"Good." Rhee taps the map. "We know where some of their forces are. The 125th Strike Division is launching attacks on some of our groups, slowing our advance but inflicting little damage. However, while they know where we are, we have little idea of their locations. We need information."

"I'm no expert, but I believe you possess a summon known as a Shikigami?"

The longest-bearded and most elaborately dressed mage stands up and bowed. "Indeed. They are small, quick and easy to disguise, as well as being powerful enough mages to escape a dangerous situation."

"It's the disguise part that we need. I want you to send your Shikigami into enemy territory, and find as much as you can. Avoid being detected, but don't let it slow you down. We need this information to hit them back, as hard as we can."

The Onmyoji nod and leave, heading to special circles where the paper needed to create these servants is being readied.

Alone again, the General turns to his own magic, reaching into his core to find the spell he prepared for communication.

"General Bohai Chao, this is General Shin Rhee. Do you have any Alchemists amongst your forces? I am interested in conducting an experiment. Please reply."

General Bohai laughed. This was going to be as easy as cake. The foolish westerners knew nothing of the ways of magic and nature, but soon they would see their wrongdoings and become one with the Earth, bringing the whole world to peace. Even if the Eastern Alliance had to rough them up a little bit first. Even in the Middle East, the Earth was still beautiful-the rolling dunes, the clear blue sky, the entrancing sunsets-and yet they would wish to ruin that, with their disgusting sprawls of concrete and metal growing until they choked and swallowed our majestic Mother Earth. General Shin was taking on the 501st Division, so that left him with the 125th.

Ruinors of the Earth, he thought, prepare to be smited.

"White mages!" he ordered over the magical communication link. "Set up a large-scale shield together and begin advancing."

"Black mages! Start firing off long-range attack spells at them from behind the shield."

"Knights and dragoons! Start buffing yourselves and prepare for a charge."

"Summoners! All pool your mana together and summon a golem in front of the shield to draw their fire."

[[spoiler: A separate line means a separate roll for me when I'm ordering. Also: the shield is going to be pretty huge-big enough to cover about 95-100% of the army from the front safely, at least until it wears out in about 6 hours in light to medium fire-less than that in heavy. It takes a crapload of mana to summon, but only a little to keep up, so overall I'd say about a sixth of each white mage's mana. The golem is even taller than the shield, and can last about three hours in light to medium fire. It walks slowly, but can also use powerful melée attacks, so it's sort of a tank. It also takes a ton of mana to summon, so overall I'd say a fifth of each summoner's mana. As an estimate, I'd say everyone recovers mana at a rate of a 16th of their total an hour, which is about 75-80% of what the black mages would be spending attacking this turn and about the same as what the knights would be spending buffing themselves. Again, these are just estimates and you can do whatever you want.

...I hope I didn't just confuse you, because I sure confused myself. @_@]]

Reading the latest reports, Wilkes nodded.

"Okay. Loosen up the enemy lines with a heavy bombardment from our artillery and then send strike teams. If we want to win this war, we need to strike hard and fast. Keep our own lines as strong as possible, however. I do not want us to be in a dire situation simply because we forgot to defend ourselves."

He returned to looking at the hologram, seemingly mesmerised in what was unfolding.

"Any excuses? No? The Easteners managed to establish a position in the neutral zone and we failed to do anything significant."

All officers in the briefing room were quiet, looking at their feet and trying not to get themselves noticed.

"So, all we can do now is hope that they will be satisfied with having conquered Moscow. What we will have to do now is prevent them from going any further. We must fortify the borders on our side of the zone. And I want constant surveillance of the area. If they make any more moves, we have to know about that as soon as possible."

^^^^ General Bohai: [3, Partial Success] A significant magical shield forms, but many are wary of its ability to stand up to attack. [4, Success] Your offensive magi begin a serious bombardment of the Western Forces. Significant casualties are inflicted. [1, Critical Failure] Your knights and dragoons fail to get anything done, and rush in unprepared. Many will die. [1, Critical Failure] The golem never materializes, despite all the mana used. This leaves your summoners very vulnerable.

^^^ General Wilkes: [6, Overshot] Your artillery nearly runs themselves out of ammunition and energy with their withering hail of fire. Their shields are weakened as a result. [5, Critical Success] Your strike forces smash the enemy line while suffering few casualties. [6, Overshot] Your defenses are strong... Almost too strong. You've left an opening at your rear while trying to defend your front.

^^ General Rhee: [2, Failure] The Shikigami fail to do anything significant.

^ General Krause: [4, Success] Your forces manage to secure the Western edge of Russia and set up a secure defensive line.

The ground shakes as Wilkes studies the situation.

"Tell me why the hell have we left our flanks unprotected?! Get some men there, now! Reinforce the strike teams with armoured support."

Wilkes sighed. Things were already going to hell in a handbasket.

The orb on General Bohai's desk emitted a soft, peaceful hum. "Yes?" he said, answering the call. He listened to Rhee's request. "I do have some white mages who have studied alchemy quite intensively-they're our potion and armor makers. Why do you ask?"

He then gave more orders.

"Knights and Dragoons, peel off to the side and attempt a flank at their weak point!"

"White mages, buff up the knights from afar while keeping the shield up!"

"Black mages, excellent job! Bombard them as hard as you can now that their shields are down!"

"Summoners, sit still and get your mana back up!"

General Rhee leans back. "Well, since these Onmyoji seem to be incapable of finding anything about our foes, I think I'll need to take a more active scouting plan. My mages are especially skilled in destruction and enchantment. Send some of your alchemists over here, and don't worry. They won't be put into any harm." He smiles. ^^^^ General Bohai: [1, Critical Failure] Your knights and dragoons continue straight ahead into a wall of fire. Ninety percent of them are killed. [5, Critical Success] The White Mages manage to keep at least some of the knights and dragoons alive, but most of them are still lost. [5, Critical Success] Your offensive casters inflict massive casualties. Entire platoons are wiped out by their attacks. [1, Critical Failure] Your summoners try in vain to summon another golem, causing a drastic decrease in their mana reserves.

^^^ General Wilkes: [5, Critical Success] Air support arrives and inflicts serious casualties. The tanks are repaired and back on the move. [1, Critical Failure] Your snipers are ambushed by enemies and many are lost.

General Rhee watched as the alchemists and mages arrived by eagle flight. Behind him, his own mages were preparing magic circles, and underneath an arcing matrix of magical runes and ley lines, a large force of clay warriors was being assembled.

"Now that they are here, set them to making these golems better. What I want is lightning. Lots and lots of lightning. Short out every circuit in their defensive line, and obliderate their sensors. These golems are tough enough to absorb anything the mad scientists throw at us, and more." Rhee turned to his aide. "What of the Onmyoji?"

He bowed. "They are claiming that other, dark forces interfered with their summoning."

Rhee shook his head. "Those dark forces are on our side, these days. Have the most pathetic and lowest ones executed, as an example. The rest, promise them wealth and riches is they manage to succeed the next time I need them. Until then, cut off most of their Sake. The drunken idiots..." He shook his head again, rattled his cane, and stomped off.

FFFFFUUUUU-

I didn't tell the summoners to summon another golem, just to sit there and recover mana...

The white mages in the base create cloaking devices to protect them.

The black mages in the base start killing any enemy soldiers they see.

The summoners cook up some lightning and fire elementals to start wrecking the place. Looks like they're about half out of mana.

And they're all on the run, so I guess roll for that.

"Damn!" Bohai shouted. "Those knights are useless!"

"White mages! Try to ressurrect some of the knights!"

"Knights! Retreat! Retreat!"

"Black mages! Destroy the planes!"

"Summoners! If you've recovered some mana, send out some beasts to attack their tanks! If not, sit there and recover more!"

[4, Success] Half of the lost knights and dragoons are resurrected successfully. [1, Critical Failure] The knights continue charging straight ahead.
