I really like they idea of Thrall being able to retire on a high, rather than the events of Legion.

[up][up] That's not a possibility I can rule out, though I certainly perfer the "riding off into the sunset" option.

Heck, look at Final Fantasy XI, by all accounts it's been in sunset mode for nearly a decade, it came out in... 01, 02? And its final expansion storyline was in 2015, it still has a good deal of players on it.
That got the content to back it up. Vanilla will have... vanilla content, which isn’t actually that much, and nothing more.

id also point out ffxi still gets regular patches and has literally multiple expansions of content and improvements so comparing it to wow classic is..hilariously reductive to ffxi

[up] Yeah, well... if there are any two Orcs that I would expect to be able to take down the Rogues in that situation, it's Thrall and Saurfang. [lol]

I've seen some comments to the effect that this makes canonical (outside of novelizations and short stories) that Rogue stealth is literally becoming invisible, not just hiding very well. They draw on a form of Shadow magic to cloak themselves. Also, the sounds of entering and exiting stealth are real, in-universe. Holy Tauren!

As to where this is going, Blizzard loves to toy with our expectations (even as they usually deliver perfectly straightforward narratives in the end), and we have both the "grizzled veteran fights for the honor of his people against a tyrant" and "retired leader is persuaded to return for one final battle" tropes in play, both of which often lead to death for the heroes in question.

But when you have two of them competing for who can perform the most honorable and heroic sacrifice, it's anyone's guess what will actually happen.

Before Thrall had his return cinematic I had him high on the list of people who would become Warchief next, but given that he explicitly says he doesn't want to and that Saurfang isn't even asking him to lead the Horde again, I've definitely lowered those chances a couple of notches. Not to zero, but much lower then it was before.

I'm actually strongly considering the possibility that after Sylvanas, for the next expansion at least, the Horde simply won't have a Warchief. Sure there will be someone who is commanding the Horde forces most relevant to the current crises who can act as a stand-in, but no one will be wielding the absolute dictatorial powers of the position of Warchief.

Either because the office itself will be abolished to prevent another Sylvanas, or because the Horde decides that this is the sort of decision that demands careful deliberation and a strong consensus among the Horde's upper leadership.

I could see a council of the individual Horde races leaders at least as a temporary solution.

Might as well have a permanent War Council instead of a War Chief.

Honestly, after both Garrosh and Sylvanas that is really the only sensible solution.

So at the end of the expansion will sylvanas be killed off or go rogue, cause she has less and less supporters as time goes on.

On one hand I can see a final climactic battle with her and her most loyal followers

On the other she's one of wows most iconic characters

Goes rogue and has an expansion dedicated to bringing her down, perhaps?

I am still tentatively of the opinion that she's going to do something to help bring down N'Zoth, and then either die or get put on a bus, but I'm willing to be wrong.

Given how she's been set up, either she's gonna be a boss this expansion, or the next one.

Honestly just put the Blood Elves in charge

The thing about Sylvanas is that, canonically, she is not killable by normal means. Her body is supernaturally tough and she's come back from death at least twice already. Also, we have hints if not outright statements that undead are immune to direct control by the Old Gods; in other words, they cannot be corrupted by the Void. Sylvanas knows about the Old Gods and presumably doesn't want the world to be consumed by them any more than the rest of us do; further, she has a documented agenda to defeat death itself.

Put all this together and it doesn't take a huge leap to suggest that she'll attack N'Zoth in an Evil Versus Evil manner, enabling us to deal with that abomination permanently. This could be a setup for her to make a Heroic Sacrifice (or whatever the villainous version of that is), or it could lead into the next expansion as she steals some of his power and goes on to become a final boss herself. Either would be awesome.

As much as the story is teasing Garrosh 2.0, I am 99% sure we are not going to repeat the Siege of Orgrimmar. Unlike Garrosh, Sylvanas has no particular attachment to or love for the Horde. She won't go down fighting to defend her vision of it. When it's no longer useful to her, she'll discard it as she would any other tool. However, I will concede that we might be getting Lich King 2.0. I wouldn't even mind that so much: she's an awesome character and would make a great ultimate villain; plus, defeating her once and for all could be a form of redemption for the Horde.

[up] The trope you're looking for is a villainous version of Taking You with Me.

If she has an epiphany (unlikely), then add Villain's Dying Grace.

I wouldn't mind an authentic Lich Queen. She can even use the Dark Blade to seal Bolvar and the spectral baggage in it so she doesn't have to deal with Ner'zul and Arthas. But if we do get her as the Queen of the Damned, don't kill her. That was the big mistake of Wot LK. Banish her to the Shadowlands or seal her somewhere she can be mildly annoying and menacing from.

https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/wow/t/wow-classic-not-a-bug-list/175887

As we’ve discussed before, the nature of Wo W Classic sometimes invokes different memories for different players, and this leads to certain misconceptions for some about what is or isn’t working as intended.

The following is a list of commonly-reported gameplay in Wo W Classic that is not actually a bug, and is working as we expect it to:

  • Tauren’s hitboxes and their melee reach is slightly larger than other races.
  • Being critically struck while using /sit to sit does not cause abilities like Enrage, Blood Craze, and Reckoning to activate.
  • Using the “Automatic Quest Tracking” option does not auto-track newly accepted quests. (It instead will start to track an existing quest once progress towards an objective is started.)
  • Warrior health Regeneration is working at the expected rate.
  • Quests objectives and points of interests are not tracked on the map or minimap.
  • Completed quests are marked on the minimap with a dot. (and not a “?”)
  • Feared players and NP Cs run fast.
  • Standing on top of other players while facing away allows spells and attacks to be used.
  • Creature respawn rates are much slower than in Battle for Azeroth.
  • NP Cs which offer multiple quests may inconsistently display them as a dot or a “!” on the available quests list. They were inconsistent in 1.12, and we’ve reproduced the exact inconsistency they had back then.
  • Quests that are too low level for do not show up as a “!” in the game world.
  • Available quests do not display a “!” on the minimap.
  • On level up, the message: “Your skill in Protection increased to 15” was added in 1.12.1, and we’re intending to keep that.
