Then it works? Dangerous combo.

Also, here's a thought, imagine if Doom was not remade or rebooted but re-imagined as an Immersive Sim game. It's been on my mind for few days now.

It is crazy I know, but with what Doom Eternal has in store to expand on universe... I would love to see an effort. Too bad im a lazy bastard.

It would have good ol Doom shooting but it is merely an option.

Oh yeah, thoughts on Battlemode? While lack of traditional multiplayer is noticable, would it mean much when people think of Halo and Call Of Duty when you mention that? Or Counter Strike.

Battlemode is nice way to shake things up and I don't want Certain Affinity ever to come back to Doom again. Here's a thought: it is 1vs2 because one demon is like half of what DS is? If we can scale it like that. I hope Prowler is in it because changes to its abilities is awesome, they can teleport now and fire three purple balls in spread.

Also Vampire, wouldn't it apply to all games then? What about Half-Life mods? I don't understand why there's been such effort for Freedoom but not other games... legit curious. I don't mind understanding more.

First of all, I need to distinguish a few terms.

  • Copyright is the legal right to determine how a work is sold, distributed, and licensed.
  • A license is a legal agreement regarding how a work may be distributed.
  • Proprietary software is software sold or licensed under a EULA that restricts the user's right to copy, change, and redistribute it.
  • Free software is software sold or licensed under a EULA that explicitly allows the used to copy, change, and redistribute it. (Yes, you can sell free software for money. Free here refers to freedom, not price).
  • Copyleft describes a license that mandates the recipient, and anyone to whom the recipient provides an identical or derivative copy, the right to copy, change, and redistribute it.

Quick example: Edge is proprietary, Firefox is free.

The GPL is very strictly copyleft. You can give away a copy of some GPL software for free, or you can sell it for a price, but if you do so, you must include the source code if asked, and the person you give/sell it to has the same rights.

However, the GPL is a license, not copyright. The copyright remains with id Software, and I believe that means it's ultimately held by Bethesda. This means that id can distribute copies of their software under other licenses if they choose, which includes licensing it to third parties under a proprietary agreement. This practise is commonly referred to as selling exceptions, and it's a way for programmers to earn a living off free software which even Richard Stallman is OK with.

In the case of Doom specifically, the source code is available under the GPL and is thus free, but the wads are still proprietary. The Freedoom project aims to make a completely free Doom game.

In the case of Half-Life, I believe that id licensed the Quake engine to Valve some time before they GPLed it, so Valve's codebase is still under the terms of that agreement. They can still license any of their engines to any other company to make a proprietary game, even if they have also released the engines under the GPL.

The Half-Life engine is still proprietary, so a completely free release would only be possible with a whole lot of reverse engineering to make a new, binary-compatible engine from scratch. Mods may or may not be free, depending on how the modder decides to distribute them. However, no matter how free the mods are, they don't alter the base game, so it's still not completely free, and the work to make a free engine is considerable, so most likely there just isn't the appetite to do so. Moreover, Half-Life is a fully 3D game, and making true 3D environments is a lot harder than making Doom levels.

I would like a Doom game that uses Roguelike code to procedurally generate levels.

[up]This?

Not roguelike but someone did Doomiablo, a Doom for Diablo 2. While not bad, being unable to shoot whe running is... not possible.

[up][up]Thanks! Those terms eluded me but you summed it up nicely.

Speaking of things, finding secrets can be a chore.

I mean, playing Freedoom i spent an hour trying to find some remaining secrets I threw my hands up and watched vids on youtube.

It is shocking how I miss some things under the nose.

Same went for Hedon! Some secrets are so hard to find.

Continuing to play Ultimate Doom. Currently on E 3 L 3, after getting every secret I needed (Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, Plasma Gun, I think).

In L3, I stumbled upon the legendary BFG 9000...only to die trying to get out of the lava pit because my health was so low. [lol]

So I have pistol, Shotgun, Chaingun, Rocket Launcher, and Plasma Gun so far. If only I can pick up BFG 9000 and Chainsaw, I will have all the weapons available in this chapter. cool

Tip with BFG, just when it fires be close to an enemy like Spider Mastermind and it will deal ludicrous damage to one shot it. It has 3000 hp.

BFG has such exploit where it can do thousands of damage to single target. Yeah, touch enemy just as it fires and from an angle as well.

Watching Big Mac Davis' walkthrough on Ultimate Doom before heading into Level 3 of Inferno.

Man, in addition to mazes, now later levels have a lot of backtracking required as well. And here I thought too strong enemies would be the biggest bane in my Doom playing. [lol]

Check out others, like pagb666. He has a cacodemon awesome smiley for his pfp and he does so many Doom related walkthroughs.

Speaking of backtrack, in Freedoom C 4 M 8: Launch Bay is utter bullshit. Four fuckin assault tripods (cyberdemon reskins) when you enter into a large room. Took way too many reloads because I wasted all shotgun shells on bunch of pain lords in previous level. (Finally done with Phase 1 of Freedoom) And I was a bit low on other...

Phase 2, being Doom II analogue, am grateful for super shotty there!

So hey I was thinking, I found a way to connect Doomguy and Doom Slayer... well, to make them one and the same.

So it's like part resurrection and part reincarnation. So OG Doomguy either died naturally of old age or something got to him and at first his soul was resting. After a new threat of demons loomed at the horizon, and these demons were countless and conquered God knows how many realms, fate willed him to be reborn as the Doom Slayer in a new world, as a Human Alien and to continue his Eternal onslaught of demons. To explain better, Doomguy was reborn as Doom Slayer with memories of his past life and innate knowledge of demons and demon slaying in Doom reboot. I like to think he popped an imp's head off as a toddler too in reboot continuity!

I could've explained it better but thoughts? I know there's other theories like how he got taken in by Night Sentinels some time after Doom 64 and that's a theory but I like mine better.

Also, unrelated but... we have a release date for DOOM: Annihilation! It's October 1st! Blu-Ray, DVD, Digital... yep. There will be an exclusive clip next week.

Hoo, boy. Not entirely convinced on Annihilation.

Anyways, I had a weird similar theory that, before Wolfenstein II was confirmed, I had a weird theory that BJ, being on death's door, was recruited by the Seraphim to start on a new crusade against an alien evil.

I feel like reincarnation is more complicated and doesn't really add anything? Doomguy decided to stay in hell for the rest of eternity to perpetually kick Hell's shit in at the end of DOOM 64 is more then sufficient in my mind for the Doom Slayer's origin. You might wonder how he became immortal, but like he literally died at the end of episode 1 of the first DOOM and then woke up in Hell. So uh, clearly he's always had an interesting relationship with mortality.

If Eternal decides to go some other route, I'll be annoyed, but not significantly so.

RE: The new DOOM movie: I'm willing to give it a shot especially if it ends up on netflix, but I'm not expecting it to be good. Which saddens me.

Buddy, you don't know what backtracking is in an Id Software game until you've played Quake II... it's easier to list the chapters that didn't have backtracking than the opposite.

Now that's another game that could use a HD reboot.

Oh please, Quake II is far easier to navigate.

I did hear it got this RTX treatment and it looks fantastic. Crysis? Please. Too bad I wouldn't be able to run it.

Why they didn't give Doom 3 the RTX treatment, I've no idea. That game with raytracing would be great to illuminate dark areas!

[up][up]Oh yeah... I forgot that OG Doomguy died at the end of Episode 1. Well that throws what I had in mind (and I didn't say full reincarnation, just some part of it but resurrection isn't sufficient). I also completely forgot about Doom 64's ending. Hmmm... at first Doomguy was doing fine but all of a sudden new kinds of demons appeared and actually overwhelmed him and killed him for good or rip his soul out and trap it? Until it got free? I... got nothing. This is what happens when you forget stuff. I think my theory falls apart completely sad. [up][up][up] I dig that idea tho.

Clearly there's gotta be something, so much doesn't add up.

Oh please, Quake II is far easier to navigate.

I was talking about its eagerness to make the player backtrack entire levels for a Plot Coupon. Especially the Jail, the Power and the City chapters are guilty of this. To this day, in 2019, I still haven't fully memorized the layout of the Mine levels and roam around in the City levels mostly without direction due to having no idea which objective can be reached through where and after what conditions are fulfilled.

Even one of the expansions have this kind of thing. Twice, I think.

And how is this supposed to help with my frustration with backtracking in this game, exactly? What, should I go ahead and play that game and suffer through backtracking just so I should find backtracking in this game more comfortable or something?

[up][up]Okay re-reading post, I get what you're trying to say but it's nowhere near like Hexen or Hexen II in such regard still. Yeah you backtrack but so what? It's not so damn complex. It does get more complex at the last hub, the Palace.

I use it scarcely. It only drains like 40 cells and remember dRoy: BFG's Ao E effect works if you're facing your enemies.

I mean its effects only work best if your screen is facing towards enemies you fire BFG at, thanks to invisible tracers or something.

I am too miser to even use Plasma Rifle unless I have to, so I don't think I'm going to waste BFG. When I play Doom 2016, I will probably just end up using Gauss Canon instead of BFG. [lol]

Yeah, you can actually oneshot Smastermind if you touch her the moment it fires (since BFG has a slight delay before firing, charging up and all that).

BFG in Doom reboot serves as a special weapon, not in part of game's wheel. However...

Gauss Cannon's siege mode is a real Game-Breaker alright. Fully upgraded, it can two-shot barons of hell and if you line enemies up do some reaaaaaaaaal goddamn damage. Combine it with a quad damage...
