I associate that name with and was making a reference to Dr. Anton Phibes, and William was (most likely) making a reference to Anton La Vey. Unless William was making the even more obscure, sinister reference, which I highly doubt.

Which game are you playing? Since you can also pick a Kanto starter in X and Y.

But assuming you're playing Gen I or the Gen III remake... Well, looking at gym leaders and the elite four, fire is handy only once and also requires more grind against Brock. Bulbasaur or Squirtle would give you a much easier time early on and still be able to whack things with SE hits by the E4.

Though charizard is just the coolest and lets you have a more interesting flying type than "it's a bird" at your disposal.
