Any ship after Sunny would have to be an upgrade. How do you upgrade from the ship that's made from the best wood in the world (the same wood that Gold Roger's ship was made from) and built by the best shipwrights in the world? I don't think you do.

Plus it's Franky's dream ship, so they have to do it. This is the kind of series where everyone foreshadows their dream, and the heroes get to fulfill it, and the villains don't.

Well, technically Thousand Sunny is the one that must take the Straw-Hats to Raftel, because this is precisely Franky's dream - unless Franky himself becomes responsible for the upgrade.

... And that's called jazz!

Even putting aside how getting a new ship would invalidate Franky's dream, I fail to see the appeal of going through ship melodrama round 2.

While we're at the topic of the ships, does anyone know how much bigger the Sunny is compared to the Merry? Because I can not find an image source for size comparison. The only link I could find is a four year old reddit post linking to an image that no longer exists.

Noticed some rather major name changes made by Troper DeeeFoo, namely in the One Piece: Beasts Pirates and One Piece: Three Sweet Commanders pages, and I have some questions.

  1. What is the stance again on English sources in Tv Tropes? Should the official English sources be strictly followed especially in naming things or is there some leeway? For example: Can All-Stars be allowed or it has to be Lead Performers because Viz uses it?
  2. Should major name changes be requested beforehand or are they allowed right away? For example: DeeeFoo changed all instances of "Three Sweet Commanders" to "Sweet 3 Generals" in the One Piece: Three Sweet Commanders. As a result, there are now multiple inconsistencies in regards to the change that kinda need to be addressed across multiple character pages starting with the very character page's title. Did what DeeeFoo do was okay or should there have been a discussion requesting to make a major name change beforehand?
  3. What is Kaido's epithet in the Funi dub? Is it "The King of the Beasts" like Viz or is it Kaido "of the Beasts" which is apparently much closer to the original Japanese? Funi is a valid English source to use right? I ask this because the page uses Beasts Pirates which used by Funi instead of Animal Kingdom Pirates which Viz uses.
  4. Related to the question above, what is Kaido's rank in the Funi dub? Is it Supreme Commander like Viz or is it Governor-General?

[up][up] Roughly twice as big.

[up][up][up] The Merry Go funeral scene consistently makes me cry.

The Going Merry funeral is the saddest moment in this whole series, bar none. There are other amazingly sad scenes, but nothing compares to saying goodbye to the ship that bravely carried the crew for so long.

I've watched and read that scene many times. I think I cried every single time.

Fucking hell, just thinking about it just now made my tear ducts go "it's that time again boys".

Having something similar happen to the Sunny is not only unnecessary and discordant from a narrative perspective, it would also be less powerful, and it would retroactively make the Merry scene less powerful. So, no. Sunny's going to Raftel and then living the rest of its long life as a Mugiwara Party Boat.

@Elfkaizer

1) If the thing is licensed, then we must use the official names.

2) Deee Foo just saw a rule violation and fixed it follow the rules. It's not exactly a wrong action to take but I think it should warrant discussion due to the answer for question 3.

3) If the work has more than one licensed translation, all versions are treated as valid. Consistency is not necessarry and people are told refrain from editing if they are just going. Everything about this issue falls under the same guidelines as American and Commonwealth Spellings.

4) Don't know.

[up] That's not quite correct, I think. When it comes to multiple official translations, the typical convention is "last translation wins", which is kind of the opposite of the first come, first served rule of American and Commonwealth Spellings. At the very least, this is true of titles, and it seems to me a good enough rule to go by for other things too, barring some specific reason to do otherwise. Plus American and Commonwealth Spellings explicitly doesn't apply when quoting directly from the series, which characters' names don't quite fall under, but again is as good a convention as any to follow.

Consistency in names used is important because they can be very different between translations. To paraphrase something I said in a recent ATT thread about using certain names, an entry does more harm than good if it leaves your wondering who it's even talking about.

Edit: Turns out DeeeFoo brought this to ATT earlier this year. The general feeling of the replies there seems to be when there are concurrent translations (Like Viz and Funimation), consensus determines which is used.

On Merry's funeral: I don't consider myself a tough guy, but sad scenes don't make me cry easily. That said, this scene, man... It came real close.

It's not a mortal wound, it's just someone giving out after going though so many hardships. They're sick and their loved ones must learn to let it go. And there is time to grieve, differently from Ace's death. That's harder to take.

And yeah, protecting Sunny is not only easier (better materials, Franky being there to repair it), but was also a plot point, being Kuma's last wish and all. Destroying Sunny would mean shitting on more people than just Franky...

No, both Merry's funeral and Toy Story 3 end with saying goodbye to a physical object that has taken on a life of its own in an incredibly sad manner. They're both also agreed to be amazing. I mean, I love the ending of Toy Story 4, but Toy Story 3's ending is a much closer parallel.

Um, I gave a different read to both.

To me, Toy Story 3's ending feels more like letting go of your childhood and understanding that you can't just hold on to your past. You say goodbye to a friend so it can make others happy. Merry's funeral is pretty much... well, about death. Dealing with the fact that someone is dying, going through grief and paying your respects.

Now, I know many parallels can still be traced between the two, but I feel that the TS 3 was more about life than death itself, allegories nevertheless.

Yeah, Toy Story 3's ending focuses on life while Merry's funeral focuses on death, but it's still the same concept, those are just the two sides to that coin.

I think I misunderstood Aegis' post; I thought they were comparing the possibility of losing the Sunny to TS4's Happy Ending Override of 3.

I don't know about Toy Story 3, but the entire Going Merry situation failed on basically all emotional levels for me. Which is a shame, because I can think of ways it could have actually been pretty poignant, but Oda didn't do any of them.

So the guy who Luffy almost had it out with over food. That was Blackbeard right?

If so that was a fantastic introduction.

Also God bless Cole Brown the character's English VA, may he rest in peace.

Fun fact: the second databook, One Piece Blue, was released in the short span of time between that scene and the scene where it's revealed who the guy really is. As such, the databook sees the possible main villain of the series billed as simply "Cherry Pie Man."

[up][up][up] Yeah that introduction was amazing! It showed how he's Luffy's opposite, yet shares similar philosphies, and his speech about Pirate's dreams is probably the one that encapsulate better the main theme of the series

Fun fact: Blackbeard's Italian voice actor (for that scene) is the same of Mr. Krabs
