I do wonder why the Shogun allied himself with Kaido.

Probably a combination of wanting a power grab and how people who refuse Kaido tend to not live very long.

You know what would be great? If the story sided with the current shogun for being smart enough to surrender to a guy he had no chance of beating. But Oda wouldn't write that.

I said a power grab is likely involved, but I'm curious what power the Shogun would be grabbing for. Unless it was like real feudal Japan and the title was largely meaningless, at least further away you got from the capital or something.

Orochi may be an ultra nationalist that was displeased with Oden. This is just a wild guess since we don't have much to go on right now.

Interesting that Drake apparently did something legitimately terrible. You know how people love making excuses for cool characters, or expect them to all not be really bad. Well, I guess part of that is how Oda usually writes things like this, but still.

Where is it said that he did something like that? Im not defending him, but as far as it goes with One Piece Oda likes to make a pile out of atrocious things for a character only to have them join the Strawhats after all.

Was it ever a question if Drake was kind of a monster? I thought it was hinted as far back as Sabaody that Drake was a mass killer. I have seen a theory or two speculating that Drake turned tail on the Marines because of an atrocity they committed, with him killing them all (the Marines) in turn. I don't think it is unlikely that he has more layers to him, but I really do wonder sometimes if some fans care more about having certain characters be some sort of freedom fighter against the World Government.

A lot of people don't get that you can like a character, without liking the kind of person they are.

Especially prominent here where a lot of people want to buy into the narrative that there aren't really any bad pirates, and if there are, everyone in the Government is a billion times worse (with the exception of their pet Marine characters, of course).

I mean, one of my favorite characters is Crocodile since I like the whole mafia vibe, but I don't go around trying to sweep under the rug how he plunged a country into civil war all so he could get a weapon of mass destruction. Not even Luffy forgot about that tidbit. And most pirates are indeed Chaotic Evil, but hey, they are honest about it, so it makes it okay.

Any way, I wonder if Basil and Apoo were working with Kaido before they met with Kidd, or if they joined him after they were made an offer or intimated. If it is the latter, I wonder why Kaido would give them positions of power so quickly when they probably haven't done much to earn his trust.

Impressed by their skill/reputation? Hawkins and Drake have the same rank as Sheepshead so I wouldn't be surprised if they're not that high up in the hierarchy.

It's kind of funny how so many of the Supernovas who were feared by the world for challenging the status quo have ultimately either had no real impact on it or have decided to join it.

Only Luffy, Law, & Zorro are actually worth shit in the end.

I'd wager that Kid (+Killer) and Bonney will do some important stuff later, at the very least. Maybe Uroge too.

While the series does emphasize that bad pirates are the norm, on the other hand when you see the same kind of authority that runs this world then it's easy to side with the blatantly awful pirates because of the fact that they don't flash the symbol of justice while doing horrible stuff. I was one of those who thought X-Drake would be one of the more reasonable Supernovas, but it looks like he could be just as bloodthirsty as Kidd. At this point, you wonder if they underselled how the rest could be brutal.
