@Omega Radiance: what about Rei's truth in Persona Q?

To be fair accepting death after such a shit life is kind od hard to accept

I stress that Persona 1 has the best and most interesting mechanics in the series, not necessarily that they came together to form the cohesive whole that the game deserved. However, the game is so much more complex to play than later Persona games which are just a matter of exploiting weaknesses and getting as many One Mores as possible that in my eyes it just kind of automatically wins out as the best gameplay in the series because at least there's some actual meat to the challenge.

Persona 1 is almost a strategy game in how it approaches its combat. The grid means you can't just use your strongest attacks all the time without drawbacks, and you need to plan ahead of time what roles you want your party members to play out in battle between grid placement and Personas.

Rei was closer to what I wanted yes, she still ended up accepting it later due to a god of death as her bf and getting to experience life with the IT and SEES when she otherwise couldn't in life.

P5 due to blissful ignorance tying into how control and corruption happens, actually does a god job of showing how people take blissful ignorance over the truth, submitting themseves to a higher power as a result. Only in desperation will people choose to briefly act otherwise. So Im hoping that the villain of P6 gets to power precisely due to the themes of P5 tying into it as well.

@Nikkolas:Which doesn't change that Sho Minazuki was not done well, to the point that his inability to bond except through violence was just another point against him as a bad character.

I feel like Carmine is a better version of Sho

They should have went with the direction of making Sho an obvious loser that the cast doesn't take too seriously

I have criticisms of P5, but also think it does other things very well. I really like how it addresses the theme of credibility, and how society will sadly believe a bad person with a lot of credibility over a good person with little credibility. Yoshida was also aces.

Basically how I feel too. When Persona 5 has genuinely smart things to say it nails them. When it wallows in your typical anime bullshit... it wallows.

In all three of the "Social Link Trilogy" (anyone have a better name?) I find there's a pretty jarring disconnect between the serious and comedic scenes, often resulting in much narm and cringe.

Typical anime bs can be done really well, but Persona never plays into that wackiness. It does by the numbers overused anime tropes like tsunderes hit boys because they're bitches you made them mad you b-baka, etc.

We need better comedy writing then.

P5's combat mechanics are the best in the modern series, and the entire game straight oozes style in a way that none of the earlier games have matched. On the flip side, the characters aren't as complex or as interesting in general, and the writing falls somewhat flat (largely due to shooting its message in the foot by including WACKY ANIME HIJINKS that contradict its intended themes, and by being too sissy to actually follow those themes to their logical conclusions).

What P5 is good at, it's very good at. It's just that its story isn't one of the things it's good at.

Really says something about how big Japan's problem with keep-your-head-down-ism is that even a work specifically made to criticize it can't get its own head completely up. Yowza.

I do like the P5 S Links for he dancing game I watched on youtube more than the Persona 3 ones, so I feel putting so many targets into them may have hampered their SL in P5.

I think the best example of this is Ann. The entire first arc of the game is dedicated to her being harassed by her teacher, slut shamed by her peers, and watching her friend attempt suicide after being sexually assaulted. Her SL is about how she likes being cool, confident and sexy. She goes to the beach and she and Ryuji playfully flirt with each other because they've established a healthy relationship where they understand each other's boundaries.

Then in the next arc Yusuke tries to get her to strip for him and it's completely played for laughs.

Or how Ryuji is your bro in the first arc whose whole thing is overcoming low self confidence brought about by being treated like an idiot, whereupon... he becomes the comedy sidekick of the game everyone makes fun of because he's such a dumbass. And it's an anime game so when he survives his heroic sacrifice he gets beaten up by the girls.

I think that while there are a couple of stinkers, the P5 Social Links are all really solid for this game.

Making the sex crime victim and the Ms. Fanservice the same character was weird yo.

In a better written game that'd probably be really cool. You could do a whole story about how Ann owns her body and she won't let anyone stake a claim on it. Could you imagine how many otaku would weep into their body pillows if she told Sojiro she had a boyfriend?

Well they would do more than cry like little incel babies.

There would be harassment, maybe some other crimes.

An idol got assaulted a couple days ago. The perpetrators got out of custody & she ended up apologizing in the end.

Many otaku are man-children.

The only decent anime episode ones were the Social Link ones as well. Fucking Ryuji calling Joker Renren so cute. God damn my heart.

Another bit of major Harsher in Hindsight: just a couple months after P5 came out, Japan's horrible, Axis-apologist prime minister, Shinzo Abe (who it's believed Shido was at least partially based on) was re-elected... thanks to less than 30% of the votership actually bothering to show up.

She apologized for coming out about being assaulted.

It wasn't that she was assaulted, it was the fact she spoke out against it.
