You Meddling Kids Are Useless or simply Meddling Kids Are Useless? Same idea but less likely to be confused with You Meddling Kids, because the operative word isn't buried in the middle of the phrase

...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.

hmm. The Meddling Kids Are Useless? just to emphasize that it's the same sort of meddling kids as in that other trope, only they don't get it right.

finally figured out how to set up a crowner with all the names. be sure to add any new ideas you come up with! if a mod could please attach it to this thread, that would be lovely. (madrugada?)

^^I was wondering about a variant of that: These Meddling Kids Are Useless.

But it's not about meddling kids is it?

I thought it was about any amateur investigating a crime but it ends up being the police that actually save the day.

It doesn't have to be kids, but it often is.

no, they don't always have to be kids. but since the Trope Namers for You Meddling Kids are so well-known for the situation that using a similar name for the inverse trope makes it easier to get. that trope even makes a not that it doesn't always have to be kids, we could always add something similar to this one.

also, it doesn't always have to be the police who solves the crime. Captain Planet is listed as an example on the page— arguably the planeteers are the main characters despite the name of the show, and we follow them for 90% of the episode, but in the end they never solve the emergencies themselves, they always have to call captain planet to do it.

Give it some more time. 8 votes total on the highest ranked choice isn't very many, and the crowner has only been up for three days — two of them weekend days.

Pedantic note: Shouldn't the lead option be "Those Meddling Kids Are Useless", to match Those Meddling Kids? (I voted for it anyway.)

well, considering how many suggestions were made altering just the/these/those/you, or the ordering of meddling/kids/useless, i just added whatever was suggested. sometimes changing a word alters the entire meaning of the sentence.

for example, Those Meddling Kids Are Useless sounds more like a complaint to me (as in "i told them to do this-or-this! those kids are useless!"), but it doesn't make much sense in my head to complain about them not doing something if you're calling them meddlesome in the first place. either you want them to do stuff right, or you don't (which was the spirit of the original trope: they meddled when you didn't want them to meddle).

but that's just the way i read it, hence why i didn't suggest it. but we can add it to the crowner if you want, no problem smile (you could just change your vote).

btw, the original trope is actually You Meddling Kids.

okay, so it's been more than a week now. so far 16 votes on the highest ranked option, 9 on the second-highest. doesn't sound like much to me— what do we do with this? keep waiting?

hoping this bump will at least attract a few more voters.

ok, this seems like a pretty clear lead to me. i'll change the name tonight if nobody has any objections?

Go for it. Don't forget to move associated pages, and copy over at least the YKTTW link, if not the whole discussion page.

alright, i think that's done. moved the page, moved the discussion, laconic and YKTTW link, and switched the wicks. all that's left is Bonsai Forest, which is still... curiously empty? (AFAIK it's supposed to be a troper, not a trope, but i don't know where the link is so i can fix it). and Fanfic. My Immortal, because it's locked.
