Might as well crosspost from the "matches" thread.

Our current team:

I figure we might as well also use this thread for Highlander strategizing, since we're going to have to learn to work as a team. That in mind, I give you your first lesson: helping your team's Spy.

"But, Spy can just do his own thing, right? He can wander across the map, take some stuff out, and let everyone else do their job!", you say. While not technically wrong, this notion is a little misguided, especially in the context of Highlander. There's a lot you can do to make sure your Spy— in this case, me— gets his job done, and does it without dying (that second part is important).

First and foremost: if you're trying to do an ambush type thing, going in through back routes and staying out of the way, and you see your team's Spy ahead of you, for fuck's sakes, let him go first. He probably has a plan that does not involve you running in, guns blazing, drawing attention. This doesn't mean you have to let him do everything on his own, though— the Spy has some surprisingly good synergy with other classes, because at heart, he is a support class.

  • Spy + Pyro: You'd think they wouldn't work together, but the Pyro is, by nature, an ambush class. Let the Spy go in first, backstab a few targets, and draw fire; while everyone's focused on him, the Pyro can charge in with the Backburner or Flamethrower/Axtinguisher and wreak havoc. Seriously fucks up a team that's not prepared for it.
  • Spy + Demoman/Pyro/Soldier: If there's an Engie nest set up, have the Spy run in and sap everything. While the Engie's busy trying to break sappers or kill the Spy, riddle the place with grenades, rockets, or good ol' fire. If there's a Pyro or Heavy hogging the dispenser, try peppering the area with grenade spam first to draw his attention.
  • Spy + Heavy + Medic: Simple enough. Heavy + Medic go in the front, preferably ubered, and draw everyone's attention. Spy sneaks in from behind and backstabs the unwary.
  • Spy + Sniper: Good for taking out Heavy-Medic combos; the Spy can knife the Heavy to death instantly, despite his overheal, and a headshot or fully-charged bodyshot from the Sniper will take out the weaker Medic, breaking the enemy's offense.
  • Spy + Scout: Have the Spy clear out the intel room or cap; Scout can take care of the rest unhindered at that point, with the Spy as backup.

Class dismissed.

And for the love of god Medics, please set aside your ADD for a few moments and continue to heal the Pyro instead of leaving him in favor of the nearest Soldier or Heavy. Abandoning your teammates and leaving them for dead is considered bad form and is generally frowned upon.

Besides, he needs you more than them tongue

Hey, thanks for making this thread. We've finally got some back-up Snipers, but you're still our only Spy, Blackmoon—which means we'll be relying on you to play Spy in every single match of the tournament. I hope you don't mind.

I'll be back to talk some strategy later, guys.

We've got about one week left to sign up. I'm still waiting for KSPAM to accept my friend invitation, and to get in touch with Jon C and Lemurian.

I would like to participate. My skills are kind of middling, but I've had some good runs.

The most skill I have in classes in descending order are approximately:

  • Medic
  • Heavy
  • Engineer
  • Pyro
  • Soldier
  • Scout
  • Demoman
  • Spy
  • Sniper

I'll try my best at anything, but results may vary.

(My current nick is Angry White Guy.)

DISREGARD

Sorry everyone. Can't play any TF 2 come September.

Sorry to hear that, Gelzo. We're doing alright, though; I just need to hit up the last four of you before the 26th. Incidentally, if you see me online, feel free to send me a message, even if I'm in a game.

Once that's taken care of, we can talk some strategy.

You know, if your team has anything resembling cohesion, perhaps you guys and my team can have a practice battle?

Same.

I wonder when the Polycount pack will be released? 'Cuz that could shake things up a fair bit.

It occurs to me that I will likely have access to my roommate's computer, but I really can't commit to anything.

I guess if you can't find anyone else to fill the last slot, I might be an option.

Alright, I've registered everyone for the team on ETF 2 L. As soon as everyone's verified, I'm gonna sign us up.

You know, if your team has anything resembling cohesion, perhaps you guys and my team can have a practice battle?

That would be great, and yeah, I was just wondering how I'm gonna manage 12 people who are virtually never on Steam at the same time. I guess I'll post proposed dates for matches in this thread, and anyone who can't make it can let me know then. That means, guys, check this thread every day from now on.

So, you want to propose a date for this practice battle? And do you know of a server we could use? We could use the TV Tropes server, but it only holds 16 people, not enough for a Highlander match. I need to get back in touch with Set about expanding it.

I may know about some servers I never see anyone on, so I have a few tips. These are European servers though...

I'll post them later, when I get home.

I just browsed the ETFL 2 website recently, and I find an interesting new opportunity to meet each other on the battlefields:

"For those of you who can’t wait to play some Highlander games we have created an exciting ladder competition where you can find and play all kinds of opponents. Of course you can organize practice matches against future opponents for the Highlander challenge, but there’s also the option to challenge the very veterans of competitive TF 2 as every team will be free to join the ladder. Sign up now everyone!"

this looks like a very good way to improve our team tactics before we start to fight in the "real" league.

If it's suitable for you guys we should organize some matches for the next week, or somewhat... I've never played this game in such a competitive way, and as far as I know I'm not alone with this :) we need some practice I think :)

there are more information about this whole thing: http://etf2l.org/ladder/

UPDATE:

That would be great, and yeah, I was just wondering how I'm gonna manage 12 people who are virtually never on Steam at the same time.

yes, it's a quite big problem, but I think we'll need to learn how to organize our time if we want to play together in the league.

Our group uses a Steam group to keep in touch.

And I actually know an open, passcoded server (well, it's actually LordKat's personal server, but I have the passcode and he doesn't seem to mind) that we can play on.

That's cool. So, you want to propose a date and time for our match? You'll also need to share the IP address and password of that server.

Actually, I think I might have been kicked off of the team I was on, so that plan failed. Emphasis on might.

Well, is there room on this team? I can play anything, but Soldier, Demoman, and Sniper in particular.

Yeah, we've got a slot left if you want it. Also, I've signed us up for both the tournament and the Ladder.

We ought to all meet on Steam sometime before the tournament, as well as do some Ladder matches.
