Is this the interview in question? If so there's some good stuff here. In particular I was kind of amused that Miuea says one of his biggest stumbling blocks heading into endgame is coming up with a powerup big enough for Guts to be able to fight the Godhand but not so huge that the act of him getting it feels unbelievable or unearned.

Also surprising to see? Miura considers the sheer amount of sexual violence in earlier parts of the series an Old Shame now.

Well, to be honest, I could have guessed that because the amount of sexual violence in the story has gone down a lot in the last several years. It doesn't really seem like something he feels the need to include anymore.

Since the interview was translated from French, there's some confusion regarding the pronouns (as there's no equivalent of "it" in French). When he says "she's now gonna focus on Guts and Griffith", it's actually "it" (the story).

But yeah, it's interesting. I'm all for a Del Toro-helmed live adaptation to be honest.

English translation for the new chapter is out.

...I don't know how to feel about the fact that Griffith of all people is proposing a compassionate plan to care for war orphans, citing how a society can't live off just aristocrats alone and that the government should invest in the education of the youth. He also points out that isolating the Kushan in a single neighborhood will lead to prejudice and them being ostracized.

...like I know that Griffith seeming oddly sensible is probably part of the point and that this whole kingdom came at the expense of the whole rest of the world getting fucked over, but it's still weird.

EDIT: Oh right, I just remembered Gaiseric's whole empire was implied to have been sacrificed. That just makes this even more unsettling.

Not much to say outside of that, except that Sonia has the best faces.

Also, judging from her position at the table, Charlotte seems to be the "official" leader of Falconia, but the stuffy old guys don't really listen to her.

Anything nice and good Griffith proposes, I presume he has some kind of ulterior motive behind it.

Note he explicitly compares himself to Gaiseric. Given what's heavily implied to have happened to his empire...

I don't think he has "ulterior motives" in the classic sense... problem is, the whole catastrophe (with the real world merging with fairyland) exists because he wanted to play hero.

I'll actually be pretty underwhelmed if creating a human empire is Griffith's endgame in and of itself. Mostly because I don't see how the other four Godhand benefit from that; they care nothing for humans and already seem to basically run the world.

It's not really about the other four Godhand members, but about what the Idea of Evil wants, i.e to create meaning for humanity's existence, largely through suffering.

If that's still a thing…

Flora alluded to it, so I assume the information about it from that apocryphal chapter is still true in a Broad Strokes way.

I mean, he's dressing it up in benevolent language, but he's talking about world domination and indoctrinating every child below 10. You don't have to search for ulterior motives, you just have to consider the implications of what he's saying- he's using a problem he created as an excuse to conquer the entire world.

I must say Griffith is a very relevant character in the age of fake news and Harvey Weinstein - these days people look at anyone they admire and wonder if that admiration is truly deserved, and if their goodness is just a mask for some pretty severe ugliness.

Well, fusing the two worlds and causing a mass invasion of monsters seems pretty big.

A couple days ago I was in a thread on the Berserk subreddit asking what your personal worst ending would be. "Griffith turns out to be a genuine Well-Intentioned Extremist" was probably the top pick. Also common was "Somebody else killsteals Griffith from Guts," with many Arya Stark jokes made.

I just went for "Complete downer with the Godhand winning" myself.

This would be the worst for me, personally.

This will be objectively the worst ending they could possibly imagine (aside from Godhand winning). There needs to be a LOT of retcons and stupidity to allow this ending to happen. It's bad enough already with Griffith fanboys, who scream "Griffith did nothing wrong".

Misaimed Fandom aside, Griffith being genuinely well intentioned wouldn't be that much of a deal breaker. After all, just because your well-intentioned doesn't mean you're not a complete and utter shitstain of a person. TBH, it'd actually make him more terrifying if he genuinely believes pulling the shit he does is for any kind of greater good.

I entertained some possibilities the other day. While Griffith is in no uncertain terms suggesting that Falconia will become a fascist state with brainwashed children marching in lockstep, so far Falconia is the paradise it is said to be. Sure, the rest of the world is shot to hell, but it seems like Griffith had got what he wanted.

So I thought that maybe now that he's fulfilled his dream, what else is there for him but to care for it? The bit about wanting to make an empire like that of Gaiseric is a red flag (since it's implied there was some huge sacrificing going on there), but otherwise the ball is almost entirely in Guts's court now. The two of them seem like they have long stopped giving a shit about each other (Griffith because he won, Guts because he grew over his obsession, gained a band of genuine friends, and now also got Casca back), so:

• Either Falconia comes to Alftheim for some unspecified purpose and makes the two of them meet (which seems the most likely)
• Casca is more than enough resentful to consider using the Behelit Guts had been carrying on his person since the near-beginning of the manga
• Griffith feels genuine remorse (if he truly moonlights as a Moonlight Boy) and is trying to make some sort of amends to the two
• ...or Guts goes back on his revenge quest and his character development gets undone entirely.
