The Electric Reactive Armor has two variants actually. Both worked on by the US and the UK. One is purpose made to disrupt HEAT jets by the jet pushing through a charged plate to another plate causing a charge to flow disrupting the plate. The other variant dumps a lot of energy into an incoming threat. Supposedly it can damage or even destroy some solid shot and may jack up shells and HEAT jet streams. Details beyond that are pretty thin on the ground as it has effectively vanished from common consideration. Likely shelved for various reasons.

As for the Ratel, it is comparable to the MOWAG Pirranah family of vehicles and their derivatives. Protection rating between .50 cal and 14mm. It has a few different turret options including the 90mm Gun and 60mm Mortar turrets off of the Eland armored cars.

Probably couldn't find enough hamsters for the generator

Gar jokes, but at the end of the day I do bet good money that it was an electrical supply problem and that the option will come back to the table once we crank up power generation and start getting into the types of stuff that uses that.

...

AKA in a couple decades, but not even close to now.

Maybe the next generation of vehicles, or the one after that.... Not the current one we are switching into.

From what I understand it was horribly expensive especially when ERA was comparatively cheaper.

Everyone thinks hamsters are real easy to take care of but they actually require some specific care and a nice enriching environment to live in

Also heard about the Ultrax/CLARA hybrid armor. Any further developments about it?

CLARA looks like it was a European offering aimed mostly at Germany at the time. Not sure if anyone officially picked it up though.

Which is esp. ironic and unfortunate, because of course now they are a democracy and the company provides much needed foreign currency to keep the economy afloat.

A comprehensive twitter rundown on the HX-project, in which Finnish Air Force seeks its new fighter jet.

Rundown: Super Hornet is very strong due to established relations (and the Growler being offered), but its future after 2050 is open. F-35 is also strong and definitely will be serving in distant future, but costs and possible fit with CONOPS is unknown. Eurofighter Typhoon is also considered to be expensive to operate, but also offers independence from direct US involvement. Gripen E (and the addition of Global Eye) would be useful for dispersed operations and offers assembly in Finland which fits CONOPS, but is also in the dev phase. Rafale is the underdog, which would offer independence but at the same time has no proven relationship with Finland. All have shown their capability to use road runways.

Any decision will be political as well. Boeing and Lockheed, are both US respectively, but the F-35 especially would be an indication of an ever deepening relationship (and dependence) on NATO. Gripen would be an interesting added dimension to the deepening defence cooperation with Sweden, which is slowly taking in characteristics of a military alliance. Typhoon and Rafale would be a signal on further European defence integration, while avoiding (direct) US connections.

Of course, NATO is in all of this one way or another, but the framing and signalling will have a big impact on defence and foreign relations for us.

Anybody who says they know what's going to happen is a liar.

Honestly, Considering the current established defence policy (and having no creativity in these things), I think Boeing and Lockheed have the most to offer and the best assurances. Super Hornet would be the safest bet and would fit into the worldview of politicians who have no real experience in this matter. I think the F-35 has a lot of questions in the air, and as I'm not privy to any internal discussions, Boeing seems to have the slight upper hand.

I think the F-35 would give the most bang for buck (damn what Russia thinks), but I have some suspicion it may be a bridge too far for the current goverment. Maybe. On a personal level, I think we should be allied and I support measures that help that, but nothing radical will happen.

A good bet would be on the F-18 Super Hornet:

  • Easy training, it wouldn't be too hard for Finland to move to the "Rino" from the "Bug".
  • Cost - even if Finland joins in the consortium to make F-35 parts, her price tag may be a bridge too far for the Finns.
  • Boeing may have issues on the commercial side, but they can cut metal when it comes to fighters.
  • the Growler sweetens the deal, Russia (and the Soviets before them) have a knack for ECM.

IIRC, Lockmart threatened to cut countries out of F-35 production if they didn't buy it. Granted, that could be hot air.

The F-16 got so cheap because the countries that flew it made parts for it. I can see Lockheed cutting out countries that don't opt in.

Photos Surface Of The Army's Crazy 1,000 Mile Range Supergun Concept: Here's What We Know

The U.S. Army recently, and apparently inadvertently, offered a look at new concept art and models relating to a massive artillery piece that could have a range of 1,000 miles or more. The design concept has features that are reminiscent of the Cold War-era efforts such as the Army's M65 "Atomic Annie" 280mm cannon and the modified 16-inch naval gun employed in the U.S.-Canadian High Altitude Research Project, or HARP. It also has a general look that wouldn't be out of place in the G.I. Joe universe.

Last week, the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), part of what is now called the Combat Capabilities Development Command (CCDC), which is itself subordinate to the service's new Futures Command, released pictures on its social media accounts of a visit by Major General John George and his staff. These include images that included details about what is officially known as the Strategic Long-Range Cannon (SLRC).

All U.S. troops to leave Afghanistan in 14 months if Taliban meets commitments of peace deal signed today

DOHA, Qatar (AP) - The United States and the Taliban have signed a peace agreement aimed at ending the 18-year war in Afghanistan, America's longest.

The signing could help President Donald Trump fulfill a key campaign promise to extract America from its "endless wars." Under the agreement, the U.S. will begin withdrawing thousands of troops in exchange for Taliban commitments to prevent Afghanistan from being a launchpad for terrorist attacks.

If the Taliban meet their commitments, all U.S. troops would leave in 14 months.

Two-thirds of troops support allowing transgender service members in the military, Pentagon study finds

A Defense Department-funded study published Feb. 18 in the journal Sexuality Research and Social Policy has found that about 66 percent of active-duty soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines support the idea of serving alongside transgender personnel.

Breaking down data from nearly 500 responses, researchers found that across demographics - regardless of ethnicity, sexuality or gender - more than half of every group also supported allowing transgender Americans to serving in the military.
