I used to use channeling to create my various downward layers but I wanted a more compact vertical shaft for tight space. Somehow my dwarves don't recognize the stair set up. They can travel up and down to the lower layers but anytime I try and place say a bed or a door it says no access to the item.
Who watches the watchmen?Huh. If you zip it into an archive and post it on the Dwarf Fortress File Depot I could load it up and see if I can find the problem.
I probably have a bad stair built in the mix. Accidentally fat-fingered a key and built the wrong kind of stair. Just have to tear it out and remake it.
Who watches the watchmen?Probably. I definitely prefer stairs. It's too easy to mess up with ramps if you're not very careful about priority settings.
As I recall, having a central shaft is actually bad for pathing and decreases framerates. Better fort designs are more decentralized, with related industries grouped near each other in all three dimensions.
Ramps can be useful in that they allow a dwarf to move two spaces for the price of one, increasing their effective speed. However, they're easier to screw up than stairs. I usually reserve ramps for wagon access and use stairs for everything else.

New release dropped! There's a lot of stuff to unpack here. Guild halls are a thing now, so that laborers can share skill training. Temples have been improved and priests function as priests, right down to comforting the stressed. Multiple relationships can form in various ways, like affairs or just remarriage. Dwarves don't even have to marry to have children anymore. Oh, and you can have pets in Adventure mode. Even pet them! You can make an entire party in adventure mode, now. And get tactical command of them.
Considering starting a new fort, anything I should look for at embark to make things fairly simple? (I have DF Hack and its associated improved site-finder.)
Also, how much impact does my chosen starter civilization have on things? (Edit: and does the distance between their existing sites and my embark change anything?)

if you don't want to care about food at all really to start? I suggest bringing a rooster or two and a few hens, throwing them in a big empty room somewhere safe (they don't need food, but they need enough room or they'll start pecking each other). From there build a few nest boxes and roll in all the eggs.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"I'm playing Rimworld recently, which is a really solid game, but it gets me thinking about my true love—DWARF FORTRESS. Been re-reading our succession games, want to find some new stories outside of some of the classics like Boatmurdered, Syrupleaf, or Bravemule.
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984I have been watching the game develop more on steam. I am hoping we get something before the end of the century. :P Seriously though they have made an astounding amount of progress on the game to date. When it drops I would love to celebrate with another succession fort game for old times sake.
Who watches the watchmen?Would definitely be interesting. Especially since it has been like ten years and I still do not know how the military works :P
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"Just how far along is the Steam version by the way?
Sanity is the Lie, there is only Madness.Hard to say honestly.
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"DF has a release date. December 6 2022 for $29.99 USD
Trailer Announcement below.
YES!
"But don't give up hope. Everyone is cured sooner or later. In the end we shall shoot you." - O'Brien, 1984I'm honestly mostly gonna get steam version just to support dev :'D I mean maybe ui is better now, but I used to play this a lot few years back in ascii mode, but I'm hoping getting steam version does inspire me to play lot more again
It does look like there are some UI improvements, but indeed, I'm getting it to support him (I'll admit that it's been a while since I donated to get a crayon drawing or story).
It is out get if you can.
Who watches the watchmen?I just started playing for the first time with the Steam release. This game is absolutely enthralling.
I'm terrible at judging how large nobles' rooms need to be. Either I build it too small and I need to cram every floor tile with statues and displays to meet their demands or I build it too large and and they're satisfied before I even start decorating. My King's Throne Room is just a 27 by 27 square room with an engraved floor. There's a platinum throne in there too because I made that in advance and figured there was no better place to put it, but the King was fine with just the engraved floor.

I believe having a wall that overlaps between multiple rooms lowers the value, so you might want to try avoiding that?
But yeah otherwise rooms don't have to be very large at all? I think 7x7 or 9x9 is the biggest I tend to go.

"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"My first fortress has more than 400 coffins currently used.
We're not even on year 15.
Where the fuck can i find water? Like, i know there're cavern and stuffs, but at what depths? I think i'm in a mountain biome.
On a more lightehearted note, i've had a "Demon Spearman" be a loyal member of my military for the past ten years.

You'll find the caverns at around Z -10.
If I recall correctly, it's best to stagger stairs to avoid a prolonged fall.
